Can I assign different templates to Versatility II? Not working

- I'm using the versatility II template but I want to display different template layouts on certain sections but it's not allowing me. If I use the template chooser then this works. I have read one forum post which says some templates don't like you assigning differents ones. Is this the cause with versatiltiy? If so how can I change this? The template chooser is a little small and I want to display the different templates as a list - a little like on the Rocket Theme website.
