Make template load faster-tips? Yahoo?

Hi maybe this is a silly question. I am not a very good designer or programmer!
ok most very powerful template especially the ones at rockethemes.com take sometimes some time to load because they are heavy.
and in a website the simple html template load faster.
I was wondering if is possible to build a system where for example the first page is a simple html page with some writing and by the time the visitor read the joomla site is loading on the shadow.
example visit my site >>>>index.html>>>>>read>>>>>>> by that time joomla is loading on the shadow>>>>>>then click something like enter>>>>>>linked to joomlasite.com/index.php
so that It will give the feeling that the site is very fast.
beside that I wonder how yahoo.com do it. I check the page of yahoo at www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/
the yahoo page load so fast and yet it seems so crowded I don't get it . does anyone know how they do it?
I hope my question is clear enough
