setting up server on external HD

- I have been trying to set up a "virtual server" on a external HD I have all the sytem requirements but need some serious tutorial help installing a linux operating system on it. I found a file that installs apachie, my sql, and basic joomla stuff. I cannot figure out how to make this drive operate like the net so I can design sites on it. Please help if there is any! :-\
