Site Cloner info needed

Looking to upgrade my site to Joomla 1.5. and I have never used a backup tool to restore a site as of yet. I have a couple of questions and was wondering if someone here could help me out BEFORE I complete screw things up
My current site uses the dimensions template and I have a few 3rd party add ons.
I am primarily interested in saving the users, contacts and links info, everything else can be recreated pretty quickly so I am not pressed to keep any other site info. I am not sure about upgrading or complete rebuild. I was wondering if I get the entire site rebuilt on a sub domain i.e. test.mydomain.com and used a clone tool, (not sure which cloner yet) will the clone move everything including the template and graphics to the main site or must I install the template and graphics manually then restore the data?
Any suggestions or tutorials up that I can take a look at? And overall which cloner or backup utility would serve best in this situation?
