Not sure if this is what you're asking about...

When I start with a new site / template here's what I do:

I do two installs on two separate databases, the first for what will become the live site, and the second for testing / reference.

On the first, I use the rocket launcher to install joomla and the template without the sample data.
On the second, I use the rocket launcher to install joomla and the template with the sample data.

Then I build my site 'from scratch', when I want to add something and I can't figure it out, I use the second site for reference.

For me, it works out better than un-publishing or deleting all the sample content, changing the menu names, etc.

The 'disadvantage' is that without the sample data installed, some of the modules are not active. So in that case, you have to add modules or create custom modules. But what will take you just a bit of time to learn while doing so will really benefit you in the long run.

What I wouldn't do if starting out, install a fresh copy of Joomla from Joomla.org (with or without sample data) and then apply template files. That's what the RL is for, combining the Joomla install with the template in one shot.

    • Just like he said.

This way, everything you put on your production site, you put it there. You know how it works, where it came from, and if there's a problem you know right where to go look. When you can't figure out how to do something, use the full demo install as a guide.
