Strange Error When Installing Any Template

Posted 19 years 3 months ago
    • Via the installer in joomla, I have been trying to edit some of the files and then upload them, but i cant overwrite the files as i get permission denied errors??? It very confusing, all other files uploaded manually i can just overwrite when uploading via ftp?

Any idea why this could be and does anyone know how i could fix this??

    • Sounds like the apache user defined for your site doesn't have the proper permissions. You can check the effect of reduced permissions be looking at the administrator section in Joomla!

Login as the admin and go to the System Menu - System Info and then select the Permissions Tab. it will report to you what it finds.
Your FTP user probably has the rights to change the permissions to allow the apache user access.

    • Wow... thanks... sorted it :D In the admin panel in the main config you can change all or new file permisions, i set the to new and that did the job.... No more needing to keep uninstalling, repacking and uploading for every little change :) phew

    • If you can't modify files of the templates, it is because you've installed it with the interface. So the permission is from the httpd server and probably you don't have permission to modify files added by the server (commercial hosting server). Your are not the owner.

It exist an easy way to change it.

      1) Uninstall (delete) the template from the interface
      2) Unzip on your computer the template
      3) Simply copy the directory unzipped by ftp in /templates directory

So you'll be the owner of these files and you'll be able to modify them. ;)
