Problems with template: "Size" and "Size on Disk"

I am using the Firefrog template. I like the layout, but I don't like the colors. Thus, I'm doing a little bit of "editing" with Fireworks. I am running into a major problem:
The new image files I am uploading are much larger than the originals (kilobytes compared to bytes). I noticed that the NEW size I am uploading is "size on disk", whereas the original size is just plain "size" -- this is when I view the properties of the individual image.
My main question: How do I get my edited images the same size as the original images?
