I have been advised to upgrade to the newer version of Joomla. (I'm trying to install JReviews and had trouble so they got it installed for me but there's problems with the menu and they suggest the upgrade for that and for security sake.) I'm on 1.5.3 and there is now 1.5.7. I am not quite live but wanting to be in a week or so. I am terrified of upgrading something and not doing it right and messing all my work up.
Thanks.
Would you suggest making a copy of the site and try it on there first? Seems like a lot of work and figuring out. Do you think it's okay to just do the patch on my site?
Sorry to sound like a big 'ol chicken. LOL
Let's assume your Joomla install is in the joomla directory.
Back up your DB.
In your ISP Control Panel:
1. Create a folder with the date and version number joomla_10_20_1.5.3 - Now you have a back-up on the server.
2. Copy the entire contents of the joomla directory to the joomla_10_20_1.5.3 folder
Then
3. FTP the patch files to the joomla directory.*
4. Test.
* I prefer to upload the zip, extract it on the server, and copy from there as opposed to FTP.
IF you have a problem with the upgrade, it's just a matter of renaming folder to get back to the previous version.
(And maybe restoring the DB, but I don't think the patches affect the DB)
I.e., rename joomla to joomla_x and rename joomla_10_20_1.5.3 to joomla.
The next time around, when you update 1.5.7 to 1.5.8, do the same thing over.
I downloaded the patch. Went to my xtplorer ftp and tried to upload that patch file to root. It took about 2 minutes of a little progress bar acting like it was working but came back and said upload failed.
I then tried to unzip everything on my computer. Then go to upload in xtplorer and when I click on the folders to upload, they just keep going into the folders and into that folder and surely I don't have to upload 4,000 folders individually, eh?
Lordy, I know this is so simple but I'm having a really hard time making it out.
UPDATE: I was advised to try to upload them via my FileZilla. I have tried. The connection keeps timing out at 48% and starting over. I'm so afraid I'm ruining things.
1) Did you download the 1.5.3 patch, or the 1.5.7 full version?
2) Can you upload the patch, extract it on you server, and copy the files from the folder they were extracted to in to the joomla folder?
