Why is there so much IE6?

Posted 16 years 7 months ago
    • Scanning this forum, it seems that IE6 compatibility remains an issue for a lot of foks. I gave up on it a while ago. We switch on IE6 notification but don't really work at IE6 compatibility per se.

But all that begs the question: why is there so much IE6 in the first place?

    • it was until very recently the most popular browser on the planet. Thanks to it being included with windows XP, the most popular OS on the planet. Thankfully it's days are numbered as IE7 is overtaking it in popularity. With IE8 on the horizon, I just hope it gets dropped faster because supporting 3 versions of MS browsers is not going to be fun.

We find that people still stuck on IE6 are disinclined to upgrade their browser. My impression is that a lot of consumers don't know how or care. They wait until they get new hardware and just use whatever comes with that.

Just as bad: cross-browser CSS. I can only wish that all of them maintain strict CSS3 compliance.

    • Yep, it's frustrating. My logs show 15% or more are still on IE6, and I can't turn them away or give even them the "we hate IE6" message.

    • This is a roll up of all our sites:

      MS Internet Explorer - 74.9%
      Firefox - 19.4%
      Safari - 4%
      Opera - 0.6%
      Mozilla - 0.3%
      Netscape - 0.2%
      Unknown - 0.1%

For MSIE, it breaks down this way:

      Msie 8.0 - 0.1 %
      Msie 7.0 - 61.1 %
      Msie 6.0 - 12.3 %
      Msie 5.5 - 1.1 %
      Msie 5.17 - 0 %
      Msie 5.01 - 0 %
      Msie 5.00 - 0 %
      Msie 5.0 - 0.1 %

    • The only real reason as i see it is because of lazy company policies that says that Windows 2000/XP should be their default platform and since IE6 ships with the latest revisions (iirc) of Win2K and XP we are locked into this madness...

Personally i will scrap the IE6 support on my own sites next year :)

    • I live in the Washington, DC Metro Area. Most of the government agencies are planning on migration from XP and IE6 to Vista and IE7 by the end of 2009. That means, of course, they will be locked in and impervious to Windows 7 and IE8.

Around here, as the government goes, so does most of industry. The internet-oriented companes are the exception, but unhappily not the rule.

Firefox could exert more influence if it steps up the pace on CSS3 compliance. Also, a heavywight Thunderbird and scheduling component, in combination with FF would pose serious competition for the Outlook/IE combination.

In the meantime, cutting off users with obsolete browsers is problematic for many sites, especially those that do eCommerce.
