Outline the RT Template Development Process.

    • Hi,

I have been a member here almost a year now and have a general question about developing these great templates.

I just started a project for a company that wants to get into professional Drupal Themes and I was wanting to know something of the workflow that goes into creating sharp and flexible templates.

      Things Like Typography,

      Graphic Art,

      Module Selection,

      Positioning,

or just any thoughts you have on being a professional template developer.

      Thanks

      Matt

    • Its more difficult to generalise on a process, and certain steps are different for each template but this is the typical outset:-

      1. Create a series of designs in Fireworks
      2. Choose a certain design
      3. Develop the design ... fine tuning :)
      4. Begin coding of the template
      5. Slice up the design
      6. Continue coding the template
      7. Finish default style
      8. Complete all other style variants
      9. Continue coding the template
      10. Begin to construct the demo
      11. Continue coding the template
      12. IE testing.... :(
      13. Complete demo
      14. Complete template

That's generally how it pans out :)

Concerning the individual stages of the template construction, that is more atypical. Typography usually goes through multi-template release stages instead of changing from template to template unless there is incompatibility.

Most of the elements, such as module positions are related to the design comp, matching as closely as possible. Then there is expansion on this if its necessary. A good example is Versatility4 which has many many many modules, most of which are not apparent in the Fireworks source.

You just have to consider what the aim of the theme is, and try and match that accordingly.
