Question Regarding "Source Ordering" Here at RT...
Posted 16 years 6 months ago
Just wondered if there was any regards to Source Ordering.. I noticed a few months back, that yes, my Joomla site got indexed, and indexed well, but could it have been better? So I dug in a bit to see, depending on what I had loaded, where my content was placed, in terms of the search bots getting to it..
How much code did they have to chew through before it found the guts?
Is there any consideration for it here? just wondering... Not that I would ever leave RT.. just might start optimizing my templates.. I am actually using "Mediamogul Essentials" for that very fact.. because my content is showing up on line 202.. so... I was just wondering..

Our policy on this is that it's easier to remove features than to add them. We provide lots of features but many of them can be turned off to create a very light-weight theme. We use our labs and specifically our 'essentials' releases to provide lighter weight templates that wouldn't do well as a regular club template, but are great for members who are looking for a faster loading solution. If you want a lightweight template, I suggest trying something like "Hivemind" which was built to be fast, especially when you turn off the javascript elements.

Thanks Boss! I totally love the policy, because I think the majority of the developers much less Joomla gurus, would prefer to take away goodies, than have to spend the time adding.
Thanks for the reply I really appreciate it.
Im too much of a LAMP newbie to understand if it would even be possible to have the content higher in the code while still being placed in the correct position.
In regards to your labs.. I really appreciate and value that part of the membership. I use the mediamogul essentials because of how lightweight it is. coming in at like 242k or something like that, you cant really beat it, no matter what they say, and have a sweet looking site.
Thanks Mr. Miller for what you have going on here..

I think Versatility 4 is lightning-fast if you just disable the newsrotator at the top
I don't the issue today is big images and such. I think the REAL problem in general is poorly coded scripts and CSS. Now THAT will slow down the browser A LOT!
Please reply with a direct link to the issue & create a new thread for each new issue.

Some other things...
A good hosting provider is very important. People have been known to complain about how slow a template is but it turns out that the provider is just not delivering the content in a timely fashion. Just check out the RT demos.. Even large demo-content-packed sites on our demo are fast. Most people have broadband these days so the old dial-up rules about page size have to be adapted for today's standards. I remember when you just did not deliver a page if it was over 50kb, granted that was 10+ years ago.
Also you have to weigh the value you add to your users experience and how that is offset by SEO friendliness. Sure google loves a simple text page with the content in it's most basic form, as little javascript, images, etc. But would your users like it? it's one thing to get users to click on google and get to your site, but will they stay? Will they buy? If your site is so stripped down so that google likes it, but none of your users do, is that going to help you in the long run? This is where some of this 'fast' templates fall down, sure they are fast, but they are boring, and will not keep people coming back.
Take for example the RocketTheme website itself. Frankly our google rankings and SEO in particular are pretty awful. Part of this is the content structure, and part is the fact that we built our site for our users benefit, not for google. However even though we are not as highly ranked as we should be, we still are the largest Joomla Template Club by miles. That's all because of product quality, community and value for money, things that search engines just have no clue about. Just something else to consider.
