Which template is best suited to serve as a starting point for customization?

  • Which template is best suited to serve as a starting point for customization?

    • I'm a new member and the main reason for becoming a member is not to use the RocketTheme templates out of the box, but to create my own graphical design and use a RocketTheme template as a functional and technical foundation. There are quite a few templates to choose from though and for a newbie it's not easy to determine which template is best suited to serve as a starting point for customization. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    • I would say that you ought to just pick a template that you think has a layout that will suit your needs and start customizing. They are all pretty much the same to customize.

      Cheers and good luck!

    • I was a bit afraid that someone might say something along these lines :) Thanks for the swift reply anyway.

It's really as easy as Roland says... before you get started really think about the layout of your site and look at all the template positions in each demo.

If you are just getting started, choosing a template with module positions that match, or closely match what you envision is the key to getting up and running with the least amount of pain.

After that, the aesthetics are much easier to change than the structure.

Nothing is worse than choosing a template that looks good only to find halfway through building your site it's lacking module positions or the layout isn't working.

It's not the end of the world if this happens, module position can be added, but it entails 'hacking' the template, editing the index.php, template.css, etc.

But if you are just starting out, it can be a rather daunting.

    • Thanks for those latest replies as well.

The tutorial section does look very useful. Once I get stuck, I'll definitly take a look there first.

I can't say I'm an expert but fortunately I do have some experience in web development and the strugge with php, html and css. In fact I constructed a very basic template myself, so I know a little what I'm getting into. And yes JEM, I do use FireBug, which I think every self respecting web developer should.

This almost leads to believe that one should pick the template with the most and most flexible configurable module positions, but somehow that sounds to easy.

I'll dive into it as soon as possible and return back here as soon as I run into trouble.

      Not always the case.

If the layout you envision is fairly simple, then almost any template will do, and you can choose what suits your fancy visually.

If it's going to be more complex, then thinking of the template's layout, IMO, is the key.

I want to say, 'Nothing is impossible', although some things may be, but a little proactive planning eliminates alot of reactive coding.

Why choose a template with only 20 positions when you need 25 and have to mod the template by hand coding 5 more positions when you could choose a template with 30 positions and use 25.

      Best of luck.

We'll be here when the time comes...
