    suggestion to evaluate providers 's performance

    Posted 16 years 4 months ago
    • We could;

      1) Make a list of all the providers that we are using.
      2) Install the same RocketLauncher package (not the lighter one), without any modification, of a choosed template on all the providers in our list (on a voluntary basis, of course). This could be for a predetermined period of time like 2 months or so.
      3) Upgrade the list with the link to a particular provider whenever a new site is up.
      4) Compile average loading time for each provider from different location around the world with a simple tool like webwait (same parameter for every test) and then put the results on the list for everyone interested.

      This could be easy to realise since many of us have a multiple/nolimit hosting account.

      Any comments/suggestions about this?

    • This is not doable unless you are willing to start a company that will measure this from core locations around the globe. Measuring performance is a hard task if you want reliable data.

      If your main customer base is in Europe or North America you can forget 99.97% of all hosting companies in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America, The Middle East and so on...

      If you are running a high-traffic site and want high performance you will need something like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Delivery_Network

      Anyway, what is most important (whithout thinking of your wallet) is...

      * Where is your main customer base located?
      * How good is your host's peering agains other tier 1? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tier_1_network
      * How much can you transfer before you're "cut off"? (cheap hosts that offer unlimited transfer are lying in general)
      * Do you need fast 24/7 support?
      * How often do you need your site to be backed up?

      Personally, if i would set up a site for business i would go for the "ISP solutions" and not the $2 hosting solutions. And when i say ISP soultions i mean the webhosting the bigger ISP's offer companies and such. They have enough bandwidth, storage and fast support if something happens.

      To put it short, it's not really possible to achieve your goals and get an accurate result. Besides. if you put a script on a private user's computer then the result will vary a lot depending on that persons hardware and installed software. So if you want accurate results then you need dedicated hardware that is on 24/7 and logs everything in real time :)
