Suggestion: Forum links set to new window

Posted 16 years 4 months ago
    • Hello Andy, et al.

Could we possibly get the links in the forum to open to a new window? It gets irritating to have to remember to right-click on the links to get them to operate correctly.

      Peace,
      Rae

    • This is something different in the new phpBB3 code. Here's a clip from thier website stating why:
This was changed in phpBB3 for a couple of reasons, but one of the most important ones was the goal to achieve XHTML 1.0 Strict-validation for the whole board

As far as your posts though, Andy has added a new BBcode button "ext=" that allows your links to open in a new window.
[ext=http://your_url_here.com]Your link text to show here[/ext]

This does take some getting used to and probably isn't the most popular change in how forums operate.

    • Hello Ben,

Well, I don't get how links targeted to same tab or new window has anything to do with "XHTML 1.0 Strict-validation" but I won't argue the point. I did find a page that explains how to make code modifications in phpbb3 to get around it. See, http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/links-opening-new-windows/ (Modifying auto-detected links). Maybe it will prompt another solution.

Andy, good try, but that will only work if everyone uses it religiously. Human nature as it is and all, it's probably not very likely as this issue may not be an issue for some people. I'll just have to get in the habit of right-clicking links and choosing open to new tab.

      Peace,
      Rae
