RokSlide Issues

    • I'm sorry, but I asked this elsewhere a few days ago and still haven't gotten an answer and I have only a couple of days left to figure this out because I need to have the update launched by Feb 1.

I'm trying to update to 1.5 from 1.0 and instead of migrating opted to rebuild because believe it or not I felt it would be easier and my content is fairly simple anyway.

I am using Replicant v2 which has the built in rokslide but I can't use that one because I need to be able to pre-program (for lack of a better word) content to publish in the rokslide module on specific dates, and I can't do that in the built in version. (Or can I and I just don't know it??)

I tried using rokcontentrotator for this, but it won't allow the page to load if my content contains image links, which my content does contain - the idea is to click on a movie poster to watch a movie.

So the next best thing is the stand alone rokslide module.

In 1.0 I couldn't get the thing to slide, so I was told to turn mootools off, and it worked perfectly. I'm having the exact same issue in 1.5 but there is no option to turn off mootools, and I'm using the 1.5 version of rokslide.

How do I get rokslide to slide? (I did disable the built in rokslide - I think - I clicked the option to not show it)

If you need to look, the 1.5 version is located here: www.classiccinemaonline.com/aa
The 1.0 version is here: www.classiccinemaonline.com/a/

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Or if you have a recommendation for a better module for this purpose, I'm all ears. Or eyes. lol

      UPDATE:
I uninstalled the 1.5 version of RokSlide, switched the site into legacy mode and installed the 1.0 version of Rokslide and got this error:
      Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/classicc/public_html/aa/modules/mod_rokslide/mod_rokslide.php on line 11

I think you can and you just don't know it.

RokSlide content comes out of standard Joomla content items. If you set the publish date on the content item, you set the publish date for the RokSlide content, don't you?

I don't know for sure if using the built-in version will help over the version you have - but it's got to be at least some sort of advantage for you to use the 'factory' option rather than an 'after-market extra'.

    • Well, for the stand alone version, my problem is how to get the durned thing to slide - it's stuck on the first tab and won't budge.

For the built in version, if I could figure out how to load that via the articles manager, I surely would, and wouldn't bother with the stand alone version, but I've looked and looked and can't figure out how to do it.

I don't see any option in the articles manager or the article area itself to link to the built in rockslide, the only way I know how to load that is directly through the module position, but I see no option in the articles area to send the article to that position.

If you know how to do that, please enlighten me - I feel kinda lost and desperate here. LOL!

      Thanks!

Because the option is not in the articles area.

The way it works in Catalyst at least, is that you drop content into a particular module space in the template, and this is picked up by the slider and reformatted.

So - what you actually want to do, is set up a 'newsflash' module, in a particular module slot that's described in the Replicant documentation as being set aside for the Slider. Set the Newsflash module to drag content out of a specific content category and set that content to publish at a particular time. You might have to do a bit of fiddling and re-think the way you deploy your content ... such as ALL timed articles go into the same category and activate / deactivate at different times. If you want to archive "once-upon-a-timed" content outside of the module, you may need to set up a second category with the same content on a different timeline.

Said fiddling is going to be a whole lot easier than trying to re-code the Slider though.

    • Problem with newsflash is that it won't post my images. Or anything. lol....

The content is a series of movie posters. Every week I publish 5 movie posters as image links to the movie that the poster is about, my viewers click on the poster and watch a movie. Simple enough concept.

I played with both newsflash and rokcontentrotator - rokcontentroatator wouldn't load the webpage whenever links were tied to the images, and newsflash was just this long skinny "thing" that wouldn't load my content. It loaded the title, though.

I wonder if I need a module specially designed for my movie posters....

    • By the way, I have been thinking about "deploying" my content differently. (I like that word, thanks! :D ) I really don't like the way the stand alone rokslide loads on the page loading the tabs separately before integrating all the content into the module, so if I can find a more streamlined method that will keep people interested that would be a good thing.

One thing I do know, they like the convenience of clicking the movie posters, so whatever I do needs to continue to include those.

I just haven't been able to come up with a solution that's perfect yet, though...hmpf!

    • hehe ... "deploy" ... I guess old soldiers never die ...

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything you can do about how the Slider loads-in.

I really don't know why the Newsflash module isn't working for you - I use them all over my sites, but admittedly not in conjunction with timed content.

A custom module could work for you - but it seems like an aweful waste.

You could, of course, get around the problem by making a stack of custom HTML modules, "deploying" those to the same module position and keeping all but one unpublished at a time. Means you have to flick the switch manually - but may be a stop-gap measure for you for the time being (considering you've got less than 48 hours to figure it out).

    • Thanks for that.

I attempted to use a custom module and couldn't configure it to pick up the pre-written "articles" - so I'm thoroughly frustrated.

I may just stick with 1.0 for a while longer since it's working for me so far and take my time to play with 1.5 to see if I can get it to go - it doesn't seem as versatile as 1.0 but I hear it's much more secure.

I wonder if a custom module might not be such a waste if the wonderful folks here were to design it then offer it to other people too? Maybe I need to discuss that with RocketLabs?

About newsflash, I even tried modifying it in CSS and all I did was screw it up, so I decided I'd better not try that anymore.

      lol!

Do you (or anyone reading this) have any ideas on how to "fix" rokcontentrotator so it will use image links without screwing up the page, by chance?

I meant that you should put the 'articles' into the custom HTML module. I was only counting on them containing the images and links though.

You really shouldn't have to 'fix' Rokcontentrotator ... but now I'm a little confused ... I thought we were talking about the slider. With RokContentRotator, I needed to set the 'Preview Length' nice and high (pushed mine to 1000 chrs) to make sure it showed things the way I wanted them.

Check a site I recently completed ... Castle Glen Australia ... it has both on the front page.

PS - there's a post in the Member Sites forum which details all the extra mods, etc HERE

    • Oh, yes, they do only contain images and links - but I need to be able to pre-publish the content rather than having to manually update once a week. That leaves me free to work on other stuff and guarantees that if I end up away from my computer the movie features will still update.

Your site is beautiful! I like the way you put the content on your RokSlide, too!

Yes, we were talking about RokSlide, I thought I'd ask about RokContentRotator in case that might be a better option for me.

I'll go ahead and keep my 1.0 going until I can figure out what to do about 1.5. I wonder if anyone else has had any similar issues -- apparently not.

Thanks for the link to the module details - I'll have a lookie-see. Maybe I can get some good ideas from there.
