2 sites, 1 database?

    • Hello,

I have been editing this theme for our company website. I would like to use another RT theme with a shared userbase.

So I would like users to be able to register on the main site, then be able to login on a second site. I know its possible, but not quite sure how!

      Any ideas?

      Regards,

      Piers

    • If you're just wanting a different theme, do you really need a different site?

You can allocate more than 1 template to a single Joomla website - just hit your Joomla Template Manager, click the name of the template you want to assign, and then 'Assign' it to a specific menu item / items.

In your particular case, it may be that you want to set the '2nd site' template to be the default, and Assign the 'main site' template to your registration / public areas.

    • Thank you for the reply, but I wanted to use 2 domains. Is this still possible?

    • Yes, it is possible ... but not necessarily wise - but again, I may be underestimating your requirements. You may find something here that will help you out:

      extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-en...ments/multiple-sites

However, I can't help but wonder if you are creating a rod for your own back. There is rarely a GOOD reason for wanting to do this that can't be addressed in another, more managable way. For instance, there are techniques you can employ in your webserver configuration to make the same website respond with different pages on different domains. For purposes of SEO, I regularly set up clients' websites with 30 or more different domain names.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I'd encourage you to do more 'out-of-the-square' thinking to see if you can come up with a better solution than 2 sites on one database - I'm certain it would be more managable in the long run.

    • Hi Ragdata,

Thank you for the reply, I have been thinking about what you suggested and indeed you do make sense. Although I do have control of the servers we use, they are for client use as well so making changes may not work. I do like your ideas very much and will investigate into that further.

Maybe instead using a subdomain would be a more straight forward idea?

      Thank you

PS: What brand are the glasses in your display picture? Loving the shape and red tint.

    • You could use a subdomain, but you'll want to be careful in the way that you set it up. If you have a WHM-type application at your disposal (a Web Host Manager), you don't want to create the subdomain as you normally would, as this would make changes to your webserver config (httpd.conf) that will throw a spanner in the works.

Instead, you want to set up the subdomain on your DNS server (bind or something similar) as an A record pointing at your main domain name / IP address. Then you can include all the necessary directives in a .htaccess file (apache) to make sure the subdomain answers on a particular page or set of pages.

It's going to take a bit more thinking though to figure out a structure that will work right for you - and a bit of research on mod_rewrite directives ( apache.org/ ). To make things easier from a Joomla point-of-view, you may even want to consider having the subdomain answer only for your member's "entry" page and let the main domain take over for the rest with your secondary template and menu setup making the experience as seamless as possible for your users while being nicely managable for yourself.

The sunglasses are an ancient pair of Ray Bans - my 'lucky pair'. This photo is cropped out of one that was taken backstage (just after we finished our set) at the Woodford Folk Festival at the end of December just gone. In the full photo, we're all standing behind an Aboriginal Flag we had just finished signing for another performer.
