localhost development or dev domain?

  • localhost development or dev domain?

    • Been using Microsoft development products for years but now addicted to Joomla. Should I be doing desktop local host development or using a dev domain? I am seeing a many using dev domains - is there a reason for this? Anyone's experience about this would be helpful.

    • If your connection is speedy, a domain is fine...

But things work nicely if you use WAMP or XAMMP to run local installs for development.

When you're done, use JoomlaPack to pack the site, then upload it and install it on your server.

    • I've ALWAYS preferred development on a remote dev site using the same platform that the live site will be deployed on. I've found that it avoids some of the problems that can arise from developing on different platforms with different services available. Of course, it depends on how deep into the platform you develop - but PHP / Apache can be configured with SO many different options that I feel it can be better to err on the side of caution.
