Clarification of "non-profit" sites that you can use templates on...

  • Clarification of "non-profit" sites that you can use templates on...

    • I've just re-read the membership terms and discovered that it says "If you wish to use a template for a non-profit site, they do not count against your maximumn concurrent template usages." This is a great idea, but I'd like to be a bit clearer about what counts as a non-profit site.

Are "non-profit" sites simply sites which don't have a commercial purpose - or do they have to be registered charities etc?

      For instance,
      • I recently took over editing the Village magazine each month (what a sucker I am!) and it has grown to an extent where there is content I can't fit in. I've set up a basic website to cope with the overflow and I'm trying to encourage local people - especially teenagers - to use it. At present it uses the Solar Flare II template which I'm finding a bit unwieldy... would it be OK to use a RT template instead?
      • my husband (a retired professor) writes and records a daily poetry radio programme for KCSCFM which is currently partly funded by a grant from a charitable foundation. We seem to be covering the rest of the expenses... so it is extremely non-profit! His site (which he rarely updates but which Google seems to like despite no attempt at optimization - perversity of Google!) uses the HAiku Ramblings template at present: http://poemfortoday.com Could I use an RT template for this too?

It would be helpful to have some clarification on what is Ok and what isn't, as I don't want to exceed my membership but I seem to be involved in setting up quite a number of these community or educational sites - and once you have started using the RT templates nothing else seems quite as good!

      Thanks!

    • Well... no response so I'll assume that means no objections to my using RT themes for these sites...

Would feel better if there was more info... However as they clearly aren't designed to make a profit perhaps I'm asking for confirmation of the obvious.

    • Very good question.
I also have a question about the template usage.
My friend Bob Johanson wants to join the club.
But he wants to be able to say design by Bob Johanson on the footer as if he designed the site.
I'm pretty sure you cant do that but I want to give him an official answer.

    • I am curious also. I did a site for the local middle school's music program. The school department doesn't put much money into the program, I do it for free, host it for free for them, and pay for the domain name. My contribution to something I believe in. But I wasn't sure if this counted as a non-profit. There is nothing commercial on that site. But since I wasn't sure - I was just assuming it counted.

I figured that sites for myself (for my friends to use, for my son and his friends to use, etc.) but still nothing commercial would definitely count. It was just that one site I was unsure about. I also wondered since I am not at a point where I am ready to go to the professional stage - if I can pay for use of additional themes. I have my bird site (not converted from html yet)- nothing commercial since I am no longer breeding -which is mostly going to be educational, a separate private pet bird community (not converted either), my 15 year old son's site (also not commercial) and who knows what other fun stuff - since this is basically a hobby right now. I did do a candidate's site with one of those themes - which I will likely be taking down one of these days when I have time. The only time I got sort of paid. So as I play around - it would help to know what is nonprofit also.

      Thanks for any info.

    • I have this on my to do list to define non-profits better. here's where I stand:

"The nonprofit sector is a collection of entities that are organizations; private as opposed to governmental; non-profit distributing; self-governing; voluntary; and of public benefit"

Here's a good wikipedia page on what a non-profit is:

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit_organization

Ok, this is kinda broad, but it does cover things like church organizations, schools, charitable foundations, public radio sites, etc. However I do not consider 'personal' sites as non profit just because you don't make money from them. If you don't think you could apply for non-profit tax status, then you are probably not a non-profit.

Also, as an aside and even though it's not really related, you CANNOT put "designed by X" in the footer as stated in the FAQs, you can however put "developed by".

    • I've always used the phrase "Maintained by:" and have never had an objection by anyone.

Andy.... This is sort of on the same topic, but have you ever considered asking for receipts for those donations? I'm not suggesting that you you make it a 'rule', as I think it would make it too hard to administer. But if you could use the Tax credits to offset those large wheelbarrows of excess cash... you would probably get plenty of them.

I could probably give you three myself ... or uhmm..... $225.00. The site owners I'm talking about all have 501C status, so they are familiar with donation documentation. I get donation reciepts from them for the WORK... but you have a PRODUCT that I believe would qualify as well.
