To MyBlog or Joomla Blog - that is the question!

Posted 16 years 2 months ago
    • As a complete newbie and html dunce I am looking at the question of blogging. What is the best route to go down on letting users submit information? I would like to have a blog with commenting on it (JomComment), but ideally to have MyBlog articles to appear in the rokmininews module. As far as I understand, you cannot use MyBlog with rockmininews (unless you are a developer, which I am not). I think I prefer to use MyBlog over Joomla's article based blog style as MyBlog has better presentation and functionality. An alternative is to ditch rokmininews, install MyBlog and see if there is another way of streaming this information on the frontpage and managing a growing list of "blogs" from different users through the site. The problem with MyBlog is not knowing how each blog is categorized and stored on the system, and whether I can make them easily searchable/referenced from different parts of the site. I presume it would be easier to do if they were native Joomla articles? My aim is to create a site where authors register, log in and post an extract of their writing, and then for other writers to comment and give them marks out of 5 stars. I am also wanting to tie this in with JomSocial, and probably at some point with either phpbb3 or Kunena. The full works. I use the Mixxmag template. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

    • You may want to try Intense Debate for a blog commenting system.

      It's used here on RT.

    • Thanks for taking a moment to share that tip, I have never heard of Intense Debate. Is that easily implemented into the Joomla framework, or would it exist outside of it? I only want registered users to be able to use the blog, and want one registration to allow users to access JomSocial, possibly phpbb3 or Kunena and the user content of the site. I have no idea how this works, but I presume if everything is done through Joomla, there is that just one registration portal. I appreciate what I am saying may sound dumb, and apologies if it does!

    • Yeah, I'd like to know too as I want a blog already! I'm doing social marketing all over the place (I know; how rude!), but there's no place like home!

    • I am looking at Kickapps, which is a serious looking social networking extension and has a blog facility. Just investigating it now. Looks as though this has more experience under its belt than Jomsocial and has integration with Joomla too.

@ JEM: I have installed rokintensedebate but I find the same comments attach themselves to every article created. This means total commenting confusion, because comments don't relate to the article. I am pretty sure I did a correct install, using the serial string and pasting it in correctly. Is this a common problem, or is it "just me"? I like the tool, but if this cannot be resolved I guess I have to use JomComment and fork out for it :-(. Any suggestions to help me fix intensedebate?

    • Just coming back to this again and your first question; MyBlog or Joomla Blog...

For me, it would be Joomla blogging every time - only because well, it does it. Okay, you don't get the 'perceived' everything you get with other blogs, but in terms of basic blogging, it does it well and you are not reliant on another script ..

Also for commenting, there is JomComment but there are also other ones, that you don't have to pay for. intense debate is nice, but it's another thing you are reliant on to be up whereas if you are running a script yourself and you are confident with it, as long as your server is up, the script it up ..

I'm a big fan of not adding unless absolutely necessary although I should also say that the intense debate plugin is excellent and when I did use that, I didn't have any issues with them, so it's always an option ..

    • Thanks Damo, I am trying to use the Joomla blog, but I installed the "content submit" plugin, which forces users creating an article to one particular category or section via a menu link. Unfortunately there are two issues: one is that the user has an option to post to the front page, which is hopelessly flawed in my view as I don't want 100 articles on the front page (anyone know a workaround?). The other issue is that once the article is made, if the user then goes back to edit it then the user can recategorise it to any category on the Joomla site. That said, I am not sure MyBlog would get around this either, but I haven't tried it yet. Regarding intense debate, it is irritating that I can't get it to work as I like it!
