log in integration of Jomsocial, phpbb3 and Mixxmag

Posted 16 years 2 months ago
    • I have a Mixxmag template with a phpbb3 mix mag template linked via rokbridge and it appears to be fine. I now intend to add Jomsocial, but would like the log in details, avatar (and even profile details if possible), to primarily be in Jomsocial so that there is just one signing in to the registered part of the site but are reflected in phpbb3: So, one log in gets you into main site, Jomsocial and phpbb3 with profiles the same. Is it possible to do this, and is there any advice out there on how these work best together? Some posts say they have success using Jfusion. See link: http://uservoice.jomsocial.com/pages/general/suggestions/77830-phpbb3-integration - question: If I try to use this, will it conflict with rokbridge? I am a novice, so Joomla for Dummies answers much appreciated!

    • The two jfusion and rokbridge do not go together. Implementing jfusion would most probable (edit: 99% sure that it happens) break the style of your forum. In the jomsocial forum there are some hacks available for achieving in part what you are looking for using Rokbridge. It is possible, but still a work in progress (jomsocial developers have it under review).
Mind you in the uservoice list there is no mention of succes in doing this with jfusion. There is only someone asking for that (who is mentioning the product in multiple threads). The majority is asking for rokbridge integration, as am I in that same thread :cheesy: I would check in the rocketwerx forum for Rokbridge and in jomsocial forum.

Thanks Roeland. disappointing there is no solution yet, I guess the sensible thing is to wait on the jomsocial guys to come up with something robust and easy to implement without the need to hack away. I hope it doesn't take long though - I have a site I need to put together.

    • It is going to be a long wait, jomsocial 1.2 is planned for end of may and they've not yet scheduled the phpbb3 integration. Yesterday I downloaded the developer info, I may take a look at it one of these days and see if there is an easy way. In jomsocial forums, there is one thread that has some hacks.

    • If you come up with something first then people will bite your hand off for it. I have seen the hack. It looks slightly complicated, and being a novice it makes me nervous. The other problem is if you need to reverse it for any reason. From a commercial standpoint, I am amazed the jomsocial / Rockeththeme people are not doing more to make Rokbridge work with Jomsocial AND phpbb3. It is the holy grail for many people out there. Signups to Rocketheme and Jomsocial would increase - win/win situation.

I am not, too be real honest, the app jomsocial is very nice and easy to install, but the coding is not too good (an understatement: it defeats the whole idea of being maintainable or upgradable, it is a bit of a mess) I am starting to have warmer feelings toward other apps. Furthermore, the fact that jQuery is used AND the whole thing has been put in a wrapper is from my perspective not the way to go. The idea behind the wrapper can easily be explained -> making more money out of it, now you can sell templates for it, else it would use the joomla template its styling. I also posted about that in the jomsocial forum. The other thing is that Rokbridge is completely free, jomsocial is not and the azrul license isn't very helpful either.

Another thing: there is no reason to work on integration and to my knowledge, if you count the numerous apss and addons that Andy Miller c.s. have created, pulling them together would give you an app that runs faster, more efficient and more effective than Jomsocial. Some simple things:
      - Look at RTv2, it is a community site, the only thing it lacks is a wall and photo uploads, and some little other gimmicks, but your profile can be altered =)
      - Rokbridge is there for forum integration
      - Look at Rokbox; it can show any kind of media in joomla and phpbb3 =)
      - Look at the rokclub-login-mod, a bit of tweaking and you've got a hello-me module =)
      - Look at Rokdownloads upload and download files and photos to a site =)
      - Look at Rokintensedebate =)
      - Look at Rokslideshow =)
I'll stop here, but it may be an idea to ramm this all together and be done with it...
Add a couple of facebook gimmicks, then you may have a Roksocial :cheesy: Guess nobody has come up with that idea yet......
      This is just my 2cents.

what other applications Ronald .. i think the social applications are two .. CB and JS .. joomunity and other app are not ready at all for ppl to use on their sites ..
yea JS its not perfect but its definitely the best out there ? dont u think .. ppl who needs a social app for joomla have no option but JS ..
and lets not forget that JS is not even a year old ..
the problem again is we really in need for a social app !

    • - Look at the rokclub-login-mod, a bit of tweaking and you've got a hello-me module =)

I looked for this, but found rokclub is now now longer going to happen because according to Rhuk, it is financially bad business to get so involved in something apparently so small. I did find what was presumably his first unofficial working module of Rokclub, which you link to:

      www.rocketwerx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f...lit=club+login#p4269

Would this work on 1.5? As a novice, would it just install and work straight away? I guess this would help create more of a community feel. I have rokintense debate installed, as well as rokbridge and phpbb3. So, rokclub would have helped....BUT, rockettheme don't seem too interested since Populus to help folk create a proper community site. Which is a shame, because I actually signed up and paid my cash to have Populus - but found when installed it didn't work on Joomla 1.5. Fireboard moving to Kunena also didn't help I guess. Anyway, I love the template designs and usability (though why the extensions link is hidden vaguely at the bottom perplexes me! It took a hunt to initially figure out where those downloads were) and am not unhappy with the club, but I do wish there was more in the social apps side of things, apart from just Rokbridge (which also is limited, because menus are not automatically carried across from Joomla).

    • @bookman:
If you have access to the phpbb3 forum, you'll find the rok-club-login module there, with a complete tutorial on how to change it according to your needs:)
      See here: www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=15...52136&rb_v=viewtopic
The only requirement is that you need to have phpbb3 and joomla in one database. I have made an extensive tutorial on how to use it.
If you check what an incredible amount of apps you can implement for phpbb3, and the changes you can make to it all. I believe not many have realised the actual power of rokbridge and phpbb3, which is a bit of a dissapointment to me.
Andy provided a good reason for not doing the rokclub component, so I don't think it is necessary to go into a discussion on that.

If you know the code behind JS, you could recognize that it is also close to being a beta app, and no more than that, did you try using it with 2000+ users. I dare to bet that it will kill a dedicated mysql server. Not what you would want to happen on a live site. So, in my opinion there are not two, joomunity is a good third, the fourth is the joomsuite people touch, also an amazing app, I suggest checking out their stuff too. All components that you need for a social site are there, including the payment apps and analysis apps. The price is similar to jomsocial, but the bad thing is that parts are encrypted using ioncube, but it is joomla 1.5 native (no, I do not have a stake in this company, and I have written several complaints to them on their price raises, but honesty prevails, there apps are darn good, but I so much despise encryption).
I understand that you are a fan of jomsocial, I like it too, but wouldn't implement it just yet.
I am going to wait on version 1.2 and see what optimizations azrul and his team come up with.
That will most probably be judgement day.
Furthermore, jomsocial is joomla 1.5 compatible, it is not native, it is contained within a wrapper, for a reason I simply do not understand. I could go on about this for another thirty lines or so, but well, if you need more detail why and how, just ask me.
