    • I know this topic is a month out of date or so but for whatever it's worth - you all should take a serious look at Vbulletin and IPB. I know they are commercial, whereas PHPBB3 is not, but either one of them are heads and tails above phpbb3.

I just made the mistake of migrating my vbulletin forum over to phpbb3, something I did primarly because of the template club here - I wanted a matching one for my forum, and I liked the idea of the bridge, menu settings, etc.

Well, all of that works pretty well - the RocketBridge part. However phpbb3 itself, compared to Vbulletin, is crap. It's modification installation procedure alone makes my head spin; it's as bad as Vbulletin was back in 2004. Maybe Joomla, VB, and IPB have completely spoiled me, but these days if I have to edit a bunch of .php files - and then edit them again every time I upgrade - then I don't bother. I put up with that 5 years ago but no more.

SEO for phpbb3 is a joke, easy views such as who just registered on your forum are non-existant....I could go on and on.

I know it takes a long time to do design templates. I also know Vbulletin and IPB have excellent, well-commented templating systems that take the pain out of creating them. I guarentee you porting styles to those forums will be a lot easier than designing them in the first place for PHPBB3 was.

Both IPB and Vbulletin have a giant share of the forum market, and their customers are already used to paying for something that has value to them. You should really consider opening up your forum offerings.

In the mean time I'm going to start working on porting Infuse style 5, or at least as much of it as I can, over to IPB so I can stop using phpbb3. IPB at least has a connector for Joomla that will sync users up, even if I miss out on some other aspects of integration.

    • We are considering doing VB themes in the future, it's not ruled out, just we have a lot on our plate right now already.

    • Yeah, their new CMS looks interesting. They are really aiming at IPB (which also has a CMS) but might be interesting for Joomla/Drupal users as well. It's for-pay, so it'll be a different audience, but as their forum software has shown there is a large market for people willing to pay extra to get a supported product. Different business model for sure but hey, it works.

The problem with Vbulletin (and IPB) is that the third party market for themes, addons, and such is a wasteland, and has been for some years. There are multiple companies trying to do it, small shops for the most part, with limited support, going under, getting "bought" by other small companies that then fall down....it's really a wide open market, the demand is there but no single player dominates it. If a company as professional as RocketTheme stepped in to that market, and offer the kind of quality product they do already for Joomla/etc, I have no doubt they would dominate very quickly.

    • I have no problems with the expansion, as long as it does not spread the RT teams of developers and moderators too thinly. One of the things that makes RT so good for me is the Joomla templates PLUS the support from these forums. If the same support groups have to have knowledge across more and more fields, then there is a danger that they will be come overloaded. Careful leadership and management will be needed to maintain the high quality that we now have.
