    Lost editing

Posted 16 years 4 weeks ago
    • Probably a stupid question and something which I probably could have worked out myself but I am a tad worried. Basically I am new to Joomla so I am not to familar with editing a template localy and then uploading it and making it live.

Well I did do some editing localy and then I went to upload it via ftp to templates folder, and went to set it as a default and previewed it. It seems to have gone back to how it orginally was without my editing.

      Help would be appreciated...

    • OK, images and files you edit for the template can be uploaded to replace the current files.

Content on the other hand is stored in the database, so if you edit Articles and Module the changes won't appear on the site you want to transfer them to until you update the database.

You can do this by exporting your database from your localhost then importing them to the database on the live site.

A little tricky for a beginner, but possible, post back if you want instructions.

Another way to do it is to use JoomlaPack, pack the whole site, files and database, upload and extract on your live site and run the installer.

This thread may be of interest:

    • Jee sounds pretty intense. I don't know why I didnt think about the entire database issue before. So obvious, big stuff up on my behalf, which is most annoying.

"Another way to do it is to use JoomlaPack, pack the whole site, files and database, upload and extract on your live site and run the installer."

I have taken a look a Joomla pack it seems straight forward, I am using xamp so I am curious about the process that I should go through to pack up the site.

Thank you for your help...... :D

    • OK, it's all well documented, so you'll get the 'down and dirty' version here.

Let's assume you are working on a site for yourself or a client and you're going to update from the localhost to the live site at the end of the day, every few days, etc...

Install JoomlaPack on your local host install.

Back up your site using the default settings.

Navigate to the JoomlaPack backup folder, you'll find a zip file of your site.

Upload the zipped file to your server.

Extract the zipped package to your htdocs, public_html.

Navigate to your site, you will see a Joomla installer similar to Joomla's standard installer or the Rocket Launcher. This in an installer with your content, not Joomla's or RT's.

Go through the install process, when you get to the page for the Hostname, Username, Password, and DB name, they will be filled in already. You'll need to make the necessary changes to match the setting for the DB on your site.

Continue through the install process and usual.

      Notes:

Before extracting the zip file you'll need to delete the current joomla files and folders.

Before running the install, you'll have to drop the tables in your database through phpMyAdmin.

Alternately, you can create a new database and sub directory if you want to keep the current install.

I'll assume you understand this, if no post back.

As far as your PM concerning DB security, when you set up the DB on the server, you can give it a stronger password and enter the details as noted above.

      Also:

Finer point... I use the default settings, when you first run a backup, JoomlaPack will warn you about security; saving to the default location. This is a risk EXCEPT if right after the backup, you move the backup that you've created to someplace else. You don't have to worry about your localhost host BTW, but when you finish, move it.

    • No problem, to recap, just remember images and files you edit for the template can be uploaded to replace the current files.

E.g., if you edit the template.css.css file, or one of the style.css files if your template locally, you can just upload it.

You don't have to go through the whole back up and install process for minor changes.

As Ben mentioned, just be sure to clear your cache to see those changes.

If you've editing a lot of content, Articles, Modules, adding Menus, etc, that's when you'll need to update the database, either manually or as outlined above using JoomlaPack.

      Cheers!

Post back if you have any other questions.
