    SEO

Posted 16 years 3 weeks ago
    • Hi,

I've recently made my site SEF by changing the URL's.

I've also read that it is better to remove the global meta data info and use only meta data specific to each article.

However, I still have a dilemma, I had coded a single html page and put this in,
      <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

and the result is that when I search my 3 main keywords, I get first place on Google. However, that is only for the page that redirects to my main site.

When I perform the above search, my main site is nowhere to be seen. It's nowhere near.

How can I increase the ratings of my main site? I removed the global meta data, but now am not sure how I should write any meta information for any articles etc. I have a plugin that supposedly generates meta data for each page based on the content but that doesn't seem to be working!

      What should I be doing?

Any help would really be appreciated. I really need it! :(

    • Use the keywords for each article in your meta description tag. This can be a ongoing trial error but that is what SEO work is like. Look at your competitions descriptions to get see what is working for them. There is no shortcut to good SEO.

    • Hi Mckbaird,

      Thanks for your reply.

I have been playing around with it and am testing the site with various meta tag analyzers etc, I still can't seem to come up with correct meta tags even though I have added in Meta data information into the article.

How can I check that the meta data is actually working?

    • Your best option is to rely on using strong keywords in your content. You can write the best meta tag in the world, but most search engines rely on your use of keywords in the content and how original it is.

      Keep On Keeping On! :)

    • Hi Yves,

Thanks for your response. I already had a look at the Top 10 Joomla tips before. But I'll have a look at the other one and hopefully can get somewhere.

    • Randeep, I think you are placing too much emphasis on your meta tag description. First, meta tags and meta description aren't used by google when ranking page.

However, you can still use the meta description to your advantage.

The Meta Description is indexed and used by Google, Yahoo! & MSN. It is recommended that you keep
the description to less than 150 characters. The Meta Description works with the Title to attract
potential customers. When a prospect performs a search in Google, the results displayed are the Title
(hyperlinked) and the Description only if the Meta Description contains the keyword phrase the
      prospect used in the search.

If you do not include a Meta Description, most search engines, by default, will use the 30‐40 words of
your copy, which could look very unappealing to a prospect. Be careful not to keyword stuff your
      description.

Keep your description to 150 characters (including spaces) or less. Your focus should be in creating
curiosity with the reader, but not satisfying it with your description. If you do it right, you will achieve
higher click traffic to your site. Do not repeat any keyword phrase more than three times, and do not
have the same keyword phrase word repeated back‐to‐back.

Example: "Get the training you need and deserve at our state‐of‐the‐art training facilities. Get all six
courses, hotel accommodations, catered meals and a free Palm Pilot! We guarantee you will pass."

This description is for a training course offered in a highly competitive industry. Effective catch phrases
are: "need", "deserve", "hotel accommodations", "catered meals", "free" and "guarantee". Use catch
      phrases to your advantage.
