Php MySql - General Question- Pointers please

I want to record the playing history of my local sports team. The club has played in excess of 4500 games over 100 years and heaven knows how many different players have represented them.
The stats for this are available in hard copy- but I want to see a searchable online database record- where both games and players are searchable. I've set aside 6 weeks in the late part of the summer for data entry.
So I'm now trying to work out how best to create the infrastructure.
Can anyone point me in the right direction - this doesn't have to be joomla based, but it will need to by MySQL.
My php sql skills are 1/5
