December Nominations - Site of the Month

Posted 18 years 5 months ago
    • The last award of 2006 is upon us. I have a sneaky feeling that 2007 will produce some of the best designs yet and this is your chance to go into the new year as a winner. You know what you've got to do. The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve this year so all nominations have to be in by December 22nd.

      --

Use this thread for nominations only. If you're nominating your own site tell us what you've done to the template and what, if any, components, modules or bots you're using. If you're nominating a site you've seen just tell us why you like it and why you think it should win.

      Rules can be viewed here:
      www.rockettheme.com/index.php?option=com...mid=149&topic=2459.0

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve. You'll get listed on a very special page on this site where all the winners go:
      www.rockettheme.com/blogcategory/Site_of_the_Month/

Remember, just because you have nominated your site before doesn't mean you can't nominate it again. On atleast two occasions it has come down to the wire.

Good luck and may I be the first to wish all Rocketeers a Merry Christmas!

    • TAGamers.com is not my first website but it is the first site I have completed using a CMS (and Joomla!). So not only was I learning how to build this site, I was also learning how to use Joomla! at the same time. I'm awaiting feedback so I can finish a couple more pages but it is look and layout complete.

It is based off the recent ShockTrooper template with little modification done to the great design (yet). Wrapped in the ShockTrooper template is the Carbonite SMF template. It took about 6 weeks to get to this point. I had started with a Versatility 2 template and dropped it the ShockTrooper was released.

While we are a gaming community we are a bit different in that we play multiple games. This made finding the right design even more challenging because we wanted it to be flexible for all games and genres. Had we only played one of the popular games it would have been easier to design.

My main goal was to create a site that looks dynamic as though it is being updated routinely without me manually updating it. Some ways we accomplished this included using RSS wherever possible to keep the news updated and fresh. Since we are a gaming site, integrating multimedia was a desire. As with any site like this, a forum is a must and it needs to be visible and easy to use.

      Components used include:

      - JoomlaHacks Joomla-SMF forum bridge
      - My Content (allow users to write and publish content to front page)
      - VNETCOM Files Manager (seen under 'community')

      Modules used include:

      - JoomlaWorks Ultimate AJAX Newsflash - used as 'The 411' which in turn points to static content items that draw RSS news via kl-rssfeed mambot
      - JoomlaHacks SMF login
      - JoomlaHacks SMF Who's Online
      - JoomlaHacks SMF recent topics
      - whatismyIP (handy for gamers that need to know thier IP address)

      Mambots used include:

      - JoomlaWorks All Videos Plugin
      - JoolaWorks Tabs & Slides in Content Items (seen on Guild Wars page)
      - JoomlaHacks SMF discussbot (creates topics in forum automatically for news posted on frontpage)
      - kl_rssfeed

      miscellaneous:

      - It uses an old PHP rotator to randomly change the image on the front page and each game page.

The news and links sections are pure Joomla! I also made use of Joomla!'s integrated newsfeed capabilities. The site has a couple of validation issue that need to be addressed due to code in one of the plugins. I honestly had to break from it when I got it to this point.

Much thanks to everyone here for sharing their sites, thoughts and helping me with my questions. I could never have made something this polished on my own from scratch.

Anyways, this is probably not the winner because there a lot of great sites out there. Hopefully this will vindicate Andy from all the slack he took for taking the time to create a template for websites like TAGamers.com . good Luck to all !

    • I'd like to nominate North Coquitlam United Soccer Club (NCUSC) , which is based on the Carbonation theme.

I originally wanted to use Joomla! for the site which brought me to RocketTheme, but I couldn't achieve what was in my head so I custom-coded the site but kept the template.

The template was modified so that it used isset() functions and a $content array to populate each module space. For example, if I want something in the left sidebar, I add the HTML to $content and modify the template to evaluate isset($content) when it's working out what to display.

It only took 5 minutes to turn the RocketTheme Joomla! template into a generic template that could be used with any PHP script. In fact, it was so successful and so easy that I'm planning to do the same thing with the next site I'm developing ... I just haven't decided which template to use as a base.

Carbonation was modified in lots of tiny ways but I'm pleased with the final look and integration of the PunBB forum and Plogger gallery.

PunBB is unchanged from the distribution but uses a custom theme and a number of special included user functions that modify the HTML and achieve the integration.

Plogger was modified from the beta version in the subversion repository. The theme is based on lucid but some elements of the PHP were changed, as well as graphical elements to enable it to be integrated with the rest of the site.

    • Hi Folks,
I'd like to nominate the site I constructed for my school in 'good old Germany'. This is my first attempt at creating a website (never done that stuff before), so I had to start from scratch. After I had tackled Joomla I got nightmares when thinking about designs; but once I stumbled across the RocketTheme templates I knew: This is IT! While working on the design I started off with versatility, then changed to versatility II, and finally decided to leave it to the users - that's why you can choose either design on the frontpage.

      Check it out on www.gymnasium-meschede.de

Calendar and weather module are installed to 'freshen up' the frontpage. Further I used expose gallery, the docman component for downloading stuff for pupils (or others taking interest), and an event calendar.

The site is supposed to be a mixture of general information about our school (e.g. for parents who consider sending their kids there), and regularly updated information, polls, raffles, images, ... for our pupils to take interest in (we have around 600-700 pupils from ages 10-19).

Finally I'd like to say THANK YOU to the RocketTheme team for developing such great stuff. You're a great help!!!
