Uploading pdfs

We are trying to upload pdf fils in Joomla 1.5 and are continually having problems. First we tried uploading the pdf to the media manager. I received an error message:
* JFile::read: Unable to open file: ''
* Warning: Failed to move file!
* Error. Unable to upload file.
However, my colleague was able to upload to her media manager, which seemed odd. However, even though she uploaded it, we aren't able to link to it. After reading various sources, it appears that joomla 1.5 doesn't allow for straightforward pdf uploads and a plug in needs to be added? Is this the case? Is there a different way to go about this that we are missing?

Just tested without problem.
Check in Global Configuration if pdf is in the list of Legal Extensions (File Types), under Media Settings. And, again under Media Settings, try to disable Flash Uploader if it's activated. - Yves

Hi Yves,
I actually was now able to upload a pdf into my media manager, but now can't link to it...
Can you elaborate on, "Set the permissions of the tmp directory in your joomla base directory to 777." Not sure where to even start...

Use a ftp client like Filezilla or Cyberduck (Mac) and find in your site the folder tmp.
Follow these instructions, under Setting Permissions in FileZilla, and set the attributes of tmp folder to 777
