params.ini is Unwritable!

  • params.ini is Unwritable!

    • Hey All, I have been searching around the Joomla forums and such and cannot seem to find a legitimate solution to this. When I go to template manager in joomla 1.5 and then try to edit a template, whenever I make a change the params.ini becomes Unwritable!

I have tried changing the permissions with Filezilla, my cpanel file manger, and I have had my server company us SSH to do it. Anyone have any idea how to truly fix this?

    • It says: You are not authorised to read this forum. Am i not allowed to trouble shoot using the forums if my membership has expired recently?

    • Yes, to view the template forums, you need to be a current member.

      From the TOS

During the membership term, full access will be provided to the templates and the forums. After membership has expired, download access is removed, and forum access is limited, entitlement rights continue however.

This was the info Kat05 was referring to.

As this is not template related, you may want to search or post on joomla.ofg.

The params.ini unwritable issue is a 'Joomla thing' even if you set it to writable and make changes, as are still able to make changes, it sometimes shows unwritable.

There are a few reasons for this, one of them is not having the Joomla FTP layer set properly.

Many users skip this step during the install.

If it's not an issue, i.e., the changes save and your site appears properly, it's nothing to worry about.

If you want to troubleshoot it, you can search joomla.org for 'params.ini unwritable'

    • Just need to change the permissions so that params.ini IS writable... I change to 777 when developing and then once I go live change it to something more restrictive.

    • Thanks for your help. I was a member, and will be again soon, I was just only able to start out buying 2 months at a time. I have searched the Joomla forums and they don't seem to be any help as it seems a lot of people run into this problem, and nobody seems to have found an honest fix for this issue. Any changes I make to editing the template do not transfer to the site because the params.ini file is unwritable. I came back to this forum only because my opinion is that everyone here at RocketTheme seem to do Joomla tasks and creation at a much higher level then the standard community. Thank you so much for your help however, I will keep searching for my answer, and I will be signed back up here again soon. Have a great weekend everybody!

    • Ok, just so people here have the fix on how to overcome this error, I decided to go ahead and post the solution I found. I deleted my entire installation and MySQL user and database to get a fresh start on this. I went into Cpanel and created a new FTP user. I created a new MySQL database and user using the Cpanel MySQL Database Wizard. I re-installed all the Joomla files with my FTP client Filezilla. Then, during the installation process, when it asked for my FTP access, I put yes, and added in the new FTP user I had previously created, with the root file location as "/" without the quotes. Then I finished the installation, and it seems to work fine now. The params.ini file says that it is writable now. Thanks again for giving me the help I needed despite the fact that I couldn't see the thread. I greatly appreciate it!

    • It's normal for the "unwriteable" to be there if your server is running PHP as a CGI module (that's a good thing for security). Joomla will temporarily make the template writeable when you save/apply changes and then make it unwriteable when you're done.
