To BB3 or not to BB3

Posted 16 years 3 days ago
    • Hi

We currently run a Joomla site with an SMF forum integrated via jFusion.

      simjunkies.org

I am using MediaMogul as my Joomla template, and have edited the default SMF theme to match. It looks GREAT and we have all the functionality we want, but the forum is now WAY too slow - even with all the Joomla modules switched off on the forum.

I see that the RocketTheme phpBB3 Club offers a MediaMogul template for BB3. I know that using BB3 with Joomla would be a MUCH faster option.

So, before I go ahead and upgrade my RT membership to include the phpBB3 Club, I need to know a few things:

1: Would I be able to integrate the RokNewsflash module into the BB3 forum, in the newsflash position?

2: Would I be able to have the horizontal 'Mainmenu' items across the top of the forum as they are now - pulldowns and all?

3: Would I be able to add Joomla type menu items to the 'Right ' module position on the forum - and move it over to the left?

These are big issues for the way our site works, and I don't want to upgrade my RT membership only to find I can't use the theme. I'm more of a designer than a coder, and I always found phpBB3's theme editing a bit intimidating, so I would be very grateful for any advice.

      Thanks.

    • I can say that the phpbb3 themes are great. I know you can put the joomla menu on the top, etc, to match your joomla layout. Your other questions you're asking about, i really don't know if that's possible, since I'm using using phpbb3, and not bridged with joomla.

I'm sure some one here can answer that for you.

It depends completely on the code if it is easy to integrate or not, at present I do not know if somebody has tried this yet. Some modules can be integrated, but it depends really per module.

2: Would I be able to have the horizontal 'Mainmenu' items across the top of the forum as they are now - pulldowns and all?
Yes, that is easily realized using rokbb3.
3: Would I be able to add Joomla type menu items to the 'Right ' module position on the forum - and move it over to the left?
Yes, but this requires some custom coding, there are menu's available, so it would mean updating the links.

I would suggest just downloading the prosilver template and examining how it works, you can also add native phpbb3 mods to the template, so it doesn't need to be joomla only.

    • Just so I understand this right, it is relatively simple to integrate the main menu with the RT phpbb3 template, and the mootools drop downs will work?

    • Yes, some find it more easy then others, but my answer would be yes.

    • If I purchased a phbb theme club membership, would I find instructions on how to include the main menu with mootools?

Yes I'm full of questions. Only because switching would mean some major changes for my site.

    • Yes, I have written a small guide on how to do it, furthermore RT is working on a joomla module to include the menu even easier. At present some steps are still manual, these are going to be automated too.

    • Many thanks for your replies, Roeland. I'm glad the Mootools menu integration is a possibility - and hopefully not too tricky.

I'm still concerned about the RokNewsfash integration, though. I understand it may or may not be possible, depending on the code, but I'd really need to know for sure about this specific module before I made the switch. Would anyone be able to give me some info on that?

I have, as you suggested., already downloaded and examined the workings of the Prosilver template - but I'm afraid information such as module integration is way beyond me.

      Thanks

    • Byron,
It has not been done or tried yet. The basic issue is that you wish to show joomla articles into your phpbb3 forum. Now I can tell you that it can be done (think a littlebit about it, it basically means grabbing information from a database and showing it on a website). It is not possible as yet, because there is simply noone who has tried to achieve it.
Look for example at rokbox, the rokbox mod can be used in joomla and in phpbb3. Look at the login module here on RTv2, it is the same on both sides, do you see a difference between the login module for phpbb3 and joomla here?
However, if you wish a definite answer, then I would say no, it cannot yet be done.

    • Here's my question. Does anyone viewing this thread have the know how, and desire to make the RokNewsflash module work on the mediamogul phpbb3 template? If so, what would the cost be.

Thank you very much for your response Roeland. :)
