    phpBB3 integration

Posted 15 years 11 months ago
    • Hi,
I couldn't see where to post this so apologies if in the wrong forum. In my latest Joomla! site using RT Solar Sentinel, I am thinking of moving a current vBulletin forum across to phpBB3 and joining the phpBB3 Club. Can I ask if anyone knows how the BB templates work, do they act as a seperate install or do they integrate into the RT template I am using for the site. I'm thinking that they probably act as an independent install and that I will need to copy across my site graphics to give the appearance of one site?

On a seperate note, does anyone know if there is a decent method of moving forum posts and member details from VB3 to phpBB3?

      Best Wishes,
      Mickey

    • The phpBB3 templates are standalone and do not need Joomla to run. What you see on the demo is what it will look like when you install it. So you will need to customise it if you have custom graphics.

I do not use VB so cannot offer any advise on this matter.

    • Sorry if I jump into this thread.. but I also had a phpbb3 question and not sure where to post...
I have a site using a Joomla Populus Template and I wonder if I can replace the current Fireboard Forum that came with it with the Populus phpbb template, will I be able to wrap it as it is with Fireboard and have a complete sunc between login/registrations?

      thx

    • Hi Marco,
Can you be a bit more specific on what you intend to do? From your question I gather you wish to wrap the phpbb3 template using fireboard?

    • Sorry for not being clear:

I have a Populus Joomla site up, which is using FireBoard Forum, I would like to remove FIreboard and have phpbb3 instead, I wonder if the phpbb3 RT templates can be wrapped AND offer bridginf between the 2 user bases?
      Hope this is better now?

    • The goal is not to wrap the phpbb3 styles, because it is not neccessary, they work natively, using rokbridge you can have user integration, using the styles you achieve visual integration.

STAY AWAY FROM WRAPPER FOR A FORUM!

Wrappers tend to invite a lot of url issues when it comes to running a forum. There are many reasons for why RT developed the phpBB3 styles to operate like they do and one of the most important reasons is because it is the most conducive to future upgrades for each system, both Joomla and phpBB3. Anytime you use a wrapper, you are either not going to have functional individual urls or you are going to have a url rewrite function running that will rely on each system to operate together. The RT set up protects you against any possible upgrades from system negatively affecting the other. If you plan to have you site and forum up for years to come, this is the optimal solution!
