Maintaining URLs after Upgrade

    • First of all, joomla 1.5 is such a fantastic improvement on 1.0. However, I still have a couple of sites still on 1.0 and have been very reluctant to migrate because I am yet to find any easy to understand information/instructions on how to match up the URLs so all your traffic doesn't suddenly drop off the end cliff.

My 1.0 website has sh 404 SEF installed, obviously if I uninstall that, any link whether it be on a search engine, or on another website goes nowhere . And of course you've got the forum as well.

How many of you have successfully migrated from 1.0 to 1.5 and maintains all your URLs so your traffic stays the same?

    • I'm not an expert on this matter but can't you just migrate and install 404SEF again? I mean, the generated links should look the same, in theory at least.

I find this topic interesting :)

    • Yes, I find it very interesting, but very frustrated at the same time. My main website still on 1.0 and I feel that I really should be using up-to-date software. However, the last thing I want to happen is find everything falls to pieces around me. Migration is an absolute piece of cake, I can do that with my eyes shut now. It's just matching up these URLs. I found that it is not quite as easy as some people make out. I'm not really bothered about matching up the forum URLs, it's just my name pages that worry me. Obviously you haven't got a problem with their homepage. Wouldn't it be great if 100% of your traffic arrived at your homepage? and the really annoying thing is, you can no longer download a version of 1.015 for testing purposes.

The problem is, with 1.0, you had to use sections and categories. So when you migrate, all those are still in place. I found that the URL didn't render properly because of the way 1.5 has been developed, even using search engine friendly software. Maybe I'll have another go and see what happens.

And then I've got to move all my users across as well. The website is one thing, I think the forum is even harder to get right.

All part of the fun I suppose.

    • In the Plugins Manager there is one called "Back Link" that is supposed to try to find the best guess new url if someone uses the old url. I've had good and bad luck with this. It really depends on your site and how the new urls look, but it's Joomla's way of trying to ease the migration over.

Your other option is to use .htaccess redirects for your most popular pages:

Redirect Visitors To a New Page / Site

If you try the core plugin "Back Link"...TEST EVERY URL ON YOUR NEW SITE! One thing that happened to me was every article in a certain category ended up bringing up only the first one. Click on a link to any article there and every one pointed to the first one.

    • old URLs disappear off thesearch engines within a few weeks don't they? So at the end of the day, surely it depends on how many back links you've got to whether it is worth going to all the trouble.

    • I think Google's official word on that is sometime within 90 days at the longest.

There are so many ins and outs for all this and the rules are always changing on how pages are tracked by search engines that it's really tough to say what helps. Personally, if you have a few very important pages that may have been linked to from other sites, I might try to update those, but going through every article probably wouldn't be worth it.
