Multi-tier vertical navigation options?

For English language websites, horizontal main navigation and/or a combination of horizontal and vertical works great, no problem. Why? In part because English words are relatively short or can be reasonably abbreviated (info vs. information, etc.). This makes a main horizontal navigation scheme workable... but not always so with German websites whereasinglewordcanbecomethelengthofawholesentencebeforeyouknowit. Now try putting seven of those in a horizontal navigation.
I am working on several multilingual and/or non-English sites (German, French, Spanish), and have this particular challenge with German sites, and my German client base is growing at the moment...
Most (all? have I missed one?) of the Rocketheme templates seem to have the dominant navigation in a horizontal position. My question to the forum is whether anyone out there has adapted a RT template to a predominantly vertical navigation scheme (with two levels), and if so would you be willing to post a link or share any tips?
Also, maybe this should go in the requests category, but personally I'd love to see a RT template that emphasized a vertical navigation scheme.
