    Testing New Templates / Layouts

Posted 15 years 10 months ago
    • Is there a way that I can test a new template / module positions, etc. without actually changing my live site?.

It would be great to be able to make changes, test it and then click something like "make changes to live site"...

Right now, I have been setting up dev sites (or taking my live site offline) making changes, and then trying to reproduce all of those changes on the live site.

      Any suggestions / ideas?.

    • You can use in firebug before making live changes :)

Firebug is a web developers best friend. It is a powerful addon for the popular browser Firefox. It allows you to inspect any element on a page and edit it...live. This proves to be a powerful feature when debugging a site or even adding new elements, without the laborious task of change, save, refresh.

Please learn more about Firebug in our Firebug Tutorials.

    • Quick tips::
      1) Clear your browser cache if changes dont reflect
      2) Provide link to your site to help us help you better
      3) Use in firebug

    • You can build your site on a local install and then when you've made all your changes / edits use JoomlaPack to move it from your localhost to your server.
    • Thanks,

joomlapack? Thanks I'll have to look into that. It's a bummer redoing config stuff twice.

    • I have a question about firebug. I just watched your video tutorial on how to check for scripting errors.

I have been using it to test for CSS, but I did not realize I could check for scripting errors. I have firebug installed on firefox, and I work on a mac. But I do not see the green check mark, or a red x denoting whether or not have scripting errors. I have recently come into a problem with scripting errors, and I am unable to check them myself. I have enabled the consol, script and net sections of firebug, and still no icon on the bottom right of my screen, I do see the firebug symbol though. Can you tell me how to turn this on?

      thanks!

    • OK wait a minute, now I think it is showing up red x on some pages, but when there are no errors, it does not show anything.

    • It's weird for a second it seemed to be showing errors on my home page: iveck.com
and then I reloaded it and there are no errors, its acting a little bit funky. But maybe that's a caching issue, I dunno, any thoughts??
