Help needed: subscription website strategy

Hi all
a few months ago I built a local n ews website for a client using medimogul essentials ( www.carrickgazette.ie )
The site has bedded in and has a decent readership (400 per day on average).
However, advertising is simply not cutting it for my client and he wants to move to a paid subscription basis.
I know there are quite a few suitable extensions to do this (AEC being the current top contender).
However, this publication appeals to a limited catchment area and the client is concerned that a reader will register once and 'share' his subscription user/pass with family & friends.
Does anyone have any decent strategies for countering this?
