    • i've signed up. i've downloaded rt_sporticus.tgz, sporticus_fonts.zip, sporticus_modules.zip, sporticus_source.png.

i've looked everywhere that i can think to look, but can't figure out what my next steps are.

i've got a joomla blank site ready to go.

how do i get the template up there and start modifying it?

am i missing some basic introduction tutorial somewhere that spells all this out????

i can't even find any sticky topics in the forums about it.

      help!

    • Hello Larry,

Here is a quick breakdown to get your template installed.

      1. First you want to install the Sporticus template into your Joomla install. This can be done from the admin control panel. Go to Installers > Templates - Site. Next browse for your rt_sporticus.tgz file you downloaded and then click Upload File & Install. Now Sporticus is installed in your template list.

      2. In your admin control panel, go to Site > Template Manager > Site Templates. This will pull up the list of your installed templates. Find Sporticus on the list and select the radio button to the left and then click "Default" up in the top right corner. Now Sporticus is set as your default template. If you view your site, you should see the Sporticus template up and running.

      3. To install your modules, first unzip the "sporticus_modules.zip" file. This will give you 3 zip files. Now go to your admin control panel and select Installers > Modules. Browse to one of the mod_rt_***.zip files and click Upload File & Install. Do this for each of the 3 module zip files. Now your custom modules are installed.

      4. To place your custom modules into their proper locations, in your admin control panel go to Modules > Site Modules. Find each of the modules on the list as follows:
      • RT Login Form - Click on RT Login Form. This will bring up the configuration. Set Show Title to "No", Set the Postiion to "banner", and Published to "Yes". There are several other configuration options here that you can tweak later to get it just the way you want. Be sure to click "Save" in the top right corner when you are finished.

      • RT Slideshow - Click on RT Slideshow. This will bring up its configuration. Set Show Title to "No", Set the Position to "inset", and Published to "Yes". At the bottom, you will see a parameter for Images Directory. You will want to set this path to whatever folder contains the images you want to show in the slideshow. The slideshow will run through all images in the specified folder. Be sure to click "Save" in the top right corner when you are finished.

      • RT Scroller - Click on RT Scroller. This will bring up its configuration. Set Show Title to "No", Set the position to "newsflash", and Published to "Yes". There are many other configuration options below that can be used to further tweak to your preference. Be sure to click "Save" in the top right corner when you are finished.

This will give you the basic setup with all modules in their proper locations as in the demo. At this point you can begin to customize, tweak, and modify all you want. To begin modifying the template itself, you will want to use the other 2 files you downloaded.

      1. Unzip sporticus_fonts.zip and install the font into your system. This will allow you to edit the areas in the source that use that particular font.

      2. You will need Adobe/Macromedia Fireworks to edit "sporticus_source.png" if you wish to make graphical changes such as the logo, header areas, etc. You can also use Adobe Photoshop, but the source file will be missing the slices as well as some other elements.

      3. If you wish to edit sizes, colors, or other non image template elements, this can be done by editing the various .css files that can be found in the rt_sporticus directory.

I hope that all makes some sense and is enough to get you started. Let me know if you have any other questions. This pretty much covers the very basics of getting set up :)

    • wow, kevin.

thanks a TON. that's exactly what i was looking for.

i followed it to the letter. unfortunately, my site does not look much like the demo site.

      here's mine: tbrpreps.com/

as you can see, something is off. i've been trying to figure out what it is since following your instructions.

      i can't figure it out.

before installing the theme, i upgraded from 1.0.11 to 1.0.12 -- rather haphazardly, through FTP. however, i've double checked and all the correct files are there.

has anyone seen this template goof-up before? am i making a total newbie mistake? did i forget to check off a box somewhere?

thanks again for your help -- that should be in the "welcome to rocket themes" e-mail!

      Thanks Larry,

Your site is off to a great start! Here are a few things you can tweak to look more like the demo:

      1. The banner ad component is showing up where the login module is placed. To get rid of that, just go into Modules > Site Modules and find "Banners" on the list. Click the icon to the right of it in the Published column. This will change the icon to an "X" and will unpublish the banner module.

      2. To activate the 2 right side columns as seen in the demo, you need to publish some modules or content into them. Andy linked to the user module positions guide up top, and that gives a great graphic representation. "User 5" module position makes up the first side column or "middle column", "User 6" is the far right column with the dark background, and "User 7" is the far right column area underneath the dark section.

To get these to show, you can create new modules to publish to either of those locations, or switch one of your existing modules. If you go into Site > Modules, select a module you would like to put in those columns ("Who's Online" for example). Click on "Who's Online" and it will bring up the configuration. Set the "Position" parameter to "User 5" then click Save. Now that module will be published into the middle column. You can repeat this with other modules and fill the "User 6" and "User 7" slots to get both columns showing up.

This should get you closer to the demo look. After this point, its just a matter of stocking your site full of content, pics, etc. The Joomla User Manual Andy linked to above is the perfect tool to get better acquainted with getting all the Joomla stuff fine tuned :)
