Menu item that pulls dynamic data

Hello again all! I'm looking for the best way to add dynamic information to a menu item. Specifically, if I use a menu module and have an item for messages, I would like to display as "New (32)" with 32 being dynamically supplied from a database or URL.
For example:
Left Side-bar Menu
Message Center
Inbox (32)
Sent
Pending (12)
