    Choosing a template

Posted 15 years 9 months ago
    • I am almost a newbie (fiddled around with Wordpress) and am having a lot of trouble trying to select a template. Seriously, most of the posts on this forum are way above my understanding, and although I'm trying to read the tutorials, etc. I still don't know how to go about choosing a template.

My site will be completely new and it will be a career-related site, though I want it to have a fun look, not corporate. I don't want forums, probably no video, though I do want users to be able to post comments. I want a fairly simple uncluttered looking layout. I like clearly defined boxes with the text inside, a lot of clear space. I want to have a header with images, and I might want the images to change (not sure yet).

From what I've read module placement is a more important consideration than color because the latter can be changed easily. Is this true? I thought about going for the Chromatophore template because of the color functions, but if all can be changed then should I consider other templates?

My other question is whether the newer templates are more SEO friendly. I know a little bit about SEO and Wordpress but as of yet have not started looking into SEO and Joomla.

I am going to have to plod through building this site myself. I do have someone who can help if I run into things I need advanced knowledge for, but for the most part I need to work through it myself.

On a more positive note, while it's all very overwhelming now, I like the fact I'm learning something new everyday.

    • As far as choosing a template is concerned, use the Demo site to help you. That's how I started. It takes a while, but the time is well worth it in the long run. You can do some comparison checklists as you go, to help you with meeting your requirements.

I use Chromatophore on a couple of my sites, as it does allow some colour changes fairly easily, but it lacks some of the recent features. Some other templates allow more or fewer easy colour changes. If you know how to change the template code, you can change anything that you want, but I'm not up to that standard yet.

And even though "I am going to have to plod through building this site myself" is true, don't forget that you have a whole community here in the RT forums to help you. You have found a marvellous online group of people. :D

    • Hi John

Thanks for that. Before joining I checked out the forums and it was definitely a factor that attracted me.

I ended up going with Versatility4. Not sure if it's the best option for me but right now just learning how it works is enough of a learning curve. Once I get the site looking the way I want I'll decide if I want to experiment with other templates.

    • I use Versatility4 on one of my sites, and it works well. If you have a problem, search in the Versatility4 forum further down the list of forums here; you'll find an answer to most things there. If not, just ask in that forum for help. :)
