I agree piracy is an issue...I actually think alot of folks here inadvertently cheat the system....

I have seen a few people post more then the number of sites allowed by the normal membership (each of these using rockettheme templates).....So do Andy a favor and make sure you have the correct license for your use....

    • I'm new to RocketTheme, and have not posted much, but I've been a software developer and web developer for quite a while. I signed up for a membership so that I could download and play with the templates, as well as get to work on a site for myself, because I have recently decided to have a go at running my own Web design practice.

I've looked at the various free templates available for Joomla! and other CMS, and from a usability perspective the RocketTheme templates are an absolute dream to work with.

That is only half the story, though. The support to be found here in the forums is excellent - I have yet to encounter a serious problem that has not be addressed, in one way or another, by someone in these forums.

I'll be going pro shortly, so that I can develop to my heart's content, and I consider it a bargain.

The bottom line, I think, is that no serious developer in their right mind would not want to be a paid member in good standing. I have started the sales cycle with a handful of prospective clients, and many of them are concerned about the provenance of the software that drives their site.

If I had one idea to help reinforce this, it would be a site badge, like the "site of the month" badge, but with some sort of validation function, which paid members could place on their primary development site.

But cant those be extracted just as easily.

Its a real pain with people stealing templates. The only you can really do is find where they are uploaded, like on rapidshare and report them

The idea is that it would be like the PayPal or VeriSign badges. . . If you click it, it will validate back here at RocketTheme. People could rip the graphic off all they want, but the validation would not work because it would be tied to a domain.

Instead of going after the pirates, go after the sites. If I was a business owner, and found out that my site had been built using a stolen template, I'd be mighty upset with my web developer.

To put it another way, although any piracy is bad, the 14 year old kid who pirates an RT theme to make the equivalent of an electronic tree fort for him and his fellow hooligans to hang out in is, IMHO, far less of a concern than a working developer who steals the templates and turns around and charges people for work based on them.

Thats the best idea ive seen here, would you be able to get the validation through your profile. Atm, there is a field for your website, maybe a little change of that could be the validator

    • Exactly.

There are several ways to make the validator work, and since I'm just spitballing here, I figure it is less important to work out every last detail than it is to identify the approach in general.

I recently ran into a situation where I was pulled in to look at some existing code that the initial developer was not going to be able to complete. A small portion of the code was clearly "borrowed" (such is the way of Javascript), but it was Creative Commons licensed, and not for commercial purposes, without express permission. Of course, no such permission had been obtained. In this case, the evidence is that the initial developer made an honest mistake, as they borrowed the code second hand, and simply had not checked it enough, but when the ultimate client was made aware of it, they were concerned, because they rightly wanted to be sure that their site would not be under any undue legal threats for just that sort of thing.

Follow the money! If people are willing to pay for a site, it is important to them, and they probably expect it to help them make money, or to promote their organization in some way. The target is the uncrupulous developer who would would charge them for a site, and not pay their (very reasonable) dues here.

      Hi Matthew,

I like this idea. I basically just play around and do a few sites for clubs or societies, but the validation badge is a good idea. How would you implement it for an RT template?
