    • I imagine it being similar to the W3C badges in the footer

    • Why not let Andy run his business the way he wants? I am pretty sure he is on the top of his game.

      Hi Matthew,

I like this idea. I basically just play around and do a few sites for clubs or societies, but the validation badge is a good idea. How would you implement it for an RT template?

Well, it could be done within the template, but that wasn't really what I was getting at. I can't think of any serious professional (or even many serious amateur) developers that don't have a site of their own. My idea is to provide such people with a badge for one URL of their choosing, which would allow them to proudly display their RT status. When someone clicked that badge, it would take them back here, to a validation page which would look up the URL that linked in, and determine whether or not it was still valid (basic database lookup), and display the validation status along with the URL (to prevent spoofing), which would allow the prospective customer to know if their developer was a member in good standing or not.

Obviously this is a voluntary effort on the part of the developer, and many would not display such a badge for any number of valid reasons, but it is a way for those of us that would proudly display such a badge to raise awareness of the importance of developers 'doing the right thing'.

The one thing that there can be no doubt of, is that Mr. Miller is indeed on top of his game. I'm really just kicking around ideas here, because in the PHP world the whole problem of preventing unauthorized use is a thorny one.

Most people want to jump straight to draconian methods (site registry, encryption, digital signatures, etc.), and I think that, most of the time, such efforts are counterproductive. The vibrance of the community here is what really makes me think that a method for developers to show their dedication outside of these forums could be a useful thing.

In addition, however, I see it as a valuable marketing tool. Hypothetically speaking, if I have a prospective client who wants to know why they should go with me instead of some random person that they found on the Internet, I could point to the badge, and explain that if their site has problems, or the technology that underlies their site's look and feel is updated, I am going to be able to address those issues more quickly, and with greater efficacy than a developer who is not a member in good standing.

    • Matthew, this is an interesting idea. I'm not sure how many folks would make use of it, but i'll take it under advisement as we work on building the new RT site.

To raise suggestions is what the RT community is about. I've been around since mid 2005 and there are a good number of suggestions that Andy has found valuable. Of, course we sometimes come up with lame ideas too.

I'm not sure how many people would ultimately use it either, but I'm glad you think it interesting. I'm going to keep my thinking cap on, because I think that there are other things that can be done as well.
