Possible to build 1.5 site while existing 1.0 site is live?

Hi,
I'm getting conflicting info from my hosting company on whether it's possible to keep my Joomla 1.0 site live while I build out the upgraded version in 1.5. One guy said yes and the other said no.
It's about a two-week job to drag over all the content and images, given that it will be a part-time thing. Obviously, my site can't be down for that long.
So, is it possible to keep the existing site up while I do the build?
If so, I need some solid instructions on how to do this. I'm not a server tech and if serious SQL database work is involved, I'll need to get some help.
I hope you can help and set me (and the host) straight on how to get this done.

You can run two install at the same time.
Create a new folder in your root directory, e.g., www.mysite.com/joomla1.5 , place your Joomla 1.5 files there and run the install.
You will need to create a new MySQL database for the install.

(You could also create a sub domain if you wanted to, but a new folder will work just as well since it's temporary.)
Alternatly, you could use XAMMP to develop the site on a localhost (your computer).

When you have finished developing the site, you can use JoomlaPack to move the new, completed site to the root.
At that point, you'll have to delete the files for the current site, of move them to a sub folder. - Thanks,

Thanks for the reply.
I think using the folder will work best for me. Couple of questions...
1. When I am done with the install, what then? Do I put up a "under construction" page and delete the current 1.0 install (after backup, of course), then rename the new install folder as the mydomain.com — and that's it?
2. If I do that, what about the MySQL database? Do I need to do anything with that?
3. Is there anything else I should know about this before starting; dangers involved, etc?

Remember, you need to create a new DB for the new site.
When you are done, back it up with JoomlaPack.
It creates a copy of the site and DB and creates an installer just like the Rocket Launcher.
Put up an 'Under Construction' page.
Delete the current J1.0 files from the root.
Extract the zipped backup from JoomlaPack to the root.
Drop the tables from the new DB, then run the installer.
The DB for the old site can be deleted after you back it up of course.
The whole process should take only 15 minutes or so....
You can move the files and reconfigure the configuration.php and any other files that are affected by the move manually, but I always let JoomlaPack handle it automatically.

I'm a noob when it comes to this sort of thing. What do you mean by "drop the tables?" How?

- To drop a table select the database in the drop-down menu on the left. Then click on the table name you want to drop on the left. Then on the top right one of the tabs is "drop".
