    • Go to View > Character Encoding and set this to UTF 8 in FF and see if it persists.

    • I found this in IE 8 help. Is it possible the defaults with IE have been changed in some way on your side?

Change the colors and fonts used for webpages

Internet Explorer lets you pick which fonts and colors are used to display webpages. These settings won't affect webpages that are designed to prevent changes to colors and fonts. If you want to use your color and font choices on all webpages, regardless of whether they've been specified by the website designer, you can override website font and color settings.

To specify website fonts and colors
      Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the General tab, and then do one or both of the following:

To change the font, click Fonts. Specify the fonts you want to use, and then click OK.

To change colors, click Colors, and then clear the Use Windows colors check box. Click each color box, click the color you want to switch to, and then click OK. When you're done choosing colors, click OK.

      Click OK.

To override website font and color settings
      Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the General tab, and then click Accessibility.

Select the Ignore colors specified on webpages, Ignore font styles specified on webpages, and Ignore font sizes specified on webpages check boxes, and then click OK, and then click OK again.

Select ..., Ignore font styles specified on webpages,
that did it. normal characters appearing from now on. the defaults are "times new roman" and courier" for sites without font styles specified. but: looking a little poor now...

no news regarding ff, no matter what I change, them weird characters are still there

    • kat, you rule! Gonna call you sherlock holmes now...
      when zooming in and out some sizes are displayed correctly other appear destroyed (funny characters);
I didn't check that because I never use the zoom function  and the font works correctly in other applications like office, additionally I overlooked that thread in the mozilla forum. Will reinstall the font and report later.
Thanks to you and the others who looked into this...
