Wordpress Theme's Development Path

    • Is it your intention to release all of your recent themes (I personally could use the "Refraction" theme for wordpress) fo Wordpress?

I know there's a commercial extension on the joomla.org site which "integrates" a Wordpress install into the joomla framework but I haven't used it yet. Anything like this on the horizon for rockettheme?

      Thanks
      Greg

    • They've already stated that "most" of the recent themes - 2009, at least - are being ported over.

You're talking about CorePHP's product, which is interesting for sure, but has a specific use - it's essentially used to stick a full Wordpress blog inside a Joomla powered site. There are some nice Joomla modules for it, but it's not completely integrated.

Now, the nice thing about RocketTheme is, since they already are moving, or have moved, so many of their existing templates over to Wordpress, it should be easy to make the entire thing look seemless, but don't overlook the fact that it's really a separate blogging system - it doesn't integrate with Joomla's existing com_content, etc. As far as I know none of the "blog" software for Joomla (like myBlog) does, with the exception of Superblogger - but the latter (which I did buy) is pretty limited in it's own way.

Superblogger is by Joomlaworks, same people who developed K2, and like the latter product Superblogger is something that sounds really cool but really has some serious limitations that come up when you start using it. And it still surprises me that Superblogger itself doesn't work with K2, which is unfortunate because both products have features that would suit each other.

    • Thanks for the reply. I was really trying to avoid "integrating" wordpress into joomla using the extension because of then being limited with the wordpress add-ons and extensions.

Any idea when a "REFRACTION" theme may be released? I've got a customer site who used it and wants to tie in their wordpress install?

      Thanks

    • Dunno about templates, that's a RocketTheme question (but I can already tell you they are gonna say "soon" and that's it, Refraction is a 2009 template so unless there are serious quality issues with it I imagine you'll see it sooner or later).

Today (Nov. 4th) Joomlaworks released an update to Superblogger which fixed a few bugs, added a few new settings, and most importantly, is now K2 enabled, meaning you can actually use the two together, and pick the features of each you prefer. I'm about to try it on one of my sites so we'll see just how well they play together.

Now, K2, let's not forget, is essentially a complete replacement for com_content - it's better in a lot of ways, but if you have modules that rely on com_content you're going to have to hope they update them to support K2 as well - a lot of RocketTheme's extensions do, which I appreciate, but by no means all. Still, it's possible, with a little creativity, to completely ditch the native Joomla com_content and do all your articles, etc in K2, then pick which ones you want to further "blog-i-fy" with Superblogger. Once you get it set up it's pretty transparent to the end user, they just write content, and pick where they want it to go.

So with that said, a combo of K2 + Superblogger is probably the best overall "blog" solution at the moment as far as integrating with your overall Joomla site goes. Just remember, if you are using modules (like, for example, Rokstories) that pull data from com_content, they also need to be "aware" of K2 or you won't be able to use them with your K2 content - which probably defeats the purpose. Luckily, modules like Rokstories are K2 aware, as well as a few other companies (Ninja, Yoo, etc) and of course modules that don't pull data from com_content aren't affected at all, so it's possible to build a whole nice, completely integrated site with K2. Just be aware of what you are getting in to.

Personally, I can't wait for Joomla 1.6, which is going to add most of the features in K2 (and some in Superblogger) natively so we can avoid this nonsense next year. Then again, 1.6 itself is going to break a lot of existing modules so....welcome to free software, I guess :)

    • If you've missed it, Refraction for WordPress has been released :)
    • Remember to always post a link to the site you're having problem with.
