Forum component suggestions

    • Hello All,

I am putting together a community site for Utah cochlear implant support network. I am utilizing one of Rocket Theme's templates for this but I am not sure what to do about the forum.

I like SMF - but I would like something that is more integrated without having to tinker with bridging and modifying the template (one thats not available in the SMF club) to match the site.

      Any suggestions much appreciated!

      Thanks!

    • John, are you aware that Rush Limbaugh uses a cochlear implant? He's totally deaf without it.

    • Yep I am aware. You cannot qualify for a cochlear implant unless you're profoundly deaf with loss of about 80db and up. I am too completely deaf with out it. I can hear around 20-25db across the board with it.

Anyway, any suggestions on forums? Good ones that are worth noting that plug into joomla. I may just end up skinning SMF with latest theme but I'm lacking much time these days.

    • Hi John,

If you are short on time, you might consider hiring one of the great folks here at RT. I'm sure you'd get great service and top quality.

    • Very good, john. Don't forget, you don't have to pay for the good advice you find here!

To respond you your original question...

I've see a couple of other forums that integrate with Joomla, but they seemed to be very similar to SMF. I think the Invision forum is one - although it's a forum and integration that you pay for.

I guess the folks around here are sold on SMF. It is pretty easy to edit the CSS file for the forum template. You shouldn't have much trouble, if you've got a little experience there. Also, the bridge has been updated and works very well. I tried it last year and didn't have much luck, but they must have worked the bugs out.

      Much success to you, man.

    • Ok SMF it is.

Ive never dealt with it so what all do I need?

SMF from SMF site then the community builder bridge?

    • 1. You'll need the latest SMF forum app from SimpleMachines.org.

      2. There are two different brands of bridges to sync up Joomla with SMF.
      a. One is from SimpleMachines.org
      b. The 2nd is from JoomlaHacks.com

      3. There are various 'themes' that you can download for the SMF forum from SimpleMachines.org. You should have little problem finding a theme that you can alter (css) to make it look like your site.

As for which theme to us? I've only had experience with the one from SimpleMachines.org. That worked fine for me, but other prefer the one from JoomlaHacks.com. If you do a search on this forum, you should be able to find info on one vs. the other.

Or, after the search and you still need the latest info, you might try posting a new topic in the General Discussion forum and begin a new, updated discussion.

Again, the folks here on the RT forums will be happy to help out. I'm not a coder, but I pretend!

      Hope this helps, John. :)
