What is a good method of developing a new theme on a live site?

    • Is it possible to develop a new theme on a live site without disturbing the existing theme? Often, themes have different/additional modules and even different module locations. Could I install a new theme alongside an existing theme and rearrange the layout as necessary without disturbing the live site? I suppose working from a backup copy of the live site is an option. Are there other ways of accomplishing this?

    • 1. You could create a subdomain on your live site and install Joomla there.

      2. You could install Joomla in a separate folder on your live site.

Of course, your new site should have it's own database, do not use the the one for you live site.

When you are finished building it. You should be able to replace your current live site with the new files (in the folder). You'd need to edit the configuration.php file in order to correct the paths.

      Hope that make sense.

BTW, are you aware that there are a couple of Joomla server environments that allow you to create a Joomla site on you computer? I use Joomla Server.

    • I agree with Dave's last comment. I think the best way to do this is to install a local server environment. I used Joomla Pack to install a replica of my site on MAMP (for Macs). Then I could install a new template get it looking exactly like I wanted, then all I have to do is record what modules need to be moved, zip up the template folder on my local machine, and install it to my live site. I usually do this at night when I know traffic will be light.

    • Get hold of Joomla Cloner, back the whole site up, create a local mirror using WAMP or JSAS, develop the theme, then upload the whole lot. Easy!
