Migration script — does it make sense for only articles?
Posted 15 years 4 months ago
Hi,
I have about 160 articles in a Joomla 1.0 install and would like to import them over to the Joomla 1.5 site I'm building with a Rocket template — but that's all I want to bring over. Nothing else.
Is this feasible for the Joomla 1.5 migration script or am I asking for trouble? I'm not a coder by any means, and am getting much of my work done by the generosity of the mods and some very kind Rocket forum members.
But this migration thing looks very scary and I don't need added headaches with this. If I had to painstakingly add articles one by one, I wouldn't like it but it's safe.

A few months ago I migrated various websites from 1.0 to 1.5 and I used "migrator" and it couldn't have been easier. Obviously all this copies is the actual text, it doesn't bring across any of your images. So basically run migrator and you will end up with a script. Remember that you have to use it when creating your 1.5 site, you can't create a 1.5 site and then run the migration script. It is extremely easy and in my opinion, by far the easiest way of migrating from 1.0 to 1.5

Thanks, Pam.
My site is almost finished. If the migration is only possible on the install, then that clarifies the situation for me. I'll just start bringing the articles over, one by one.

I also migrated some sites from 1.0 and 1.5 and if you just want to migrate the articles, it will not be so difficult. You can follow
this tutorial
. Like Penn mentioned, it doesn't bring the images, but you can copy the images from the old site to the new one later

Thanks, Arifin.
However, this also must include a new Joomla 1.5 install, and my site (with 1.5) is almost done. If I did the new install, how do I ensure that all the rocket theme template modifications survive?
Again, my site is almost finished. All I want to do is move over these articles.

The migration script does not carry over any template modifications. You'll have to customize the new 1.5 template the same way you customized the 1.0 template.
Moving from 1.0 to 1.5 does take some work, but I can tell you that it's well worth the move and you will have to do this move first before moving to 1.6 anyways.
I also think you'll find a lot more help on customizing 1.5 templates on the forums as that is used by the majority of people now.

Hi Ben,
I'm not sure that I made my position clear. I am already done with modifications to the rocket template under Joomla 1.5. The site is almost ready to launch.
The only thing I want to do is to migrate the articles from the Joomla 1.0 site to the new one. That is all. When that is complete we launch the new site, and the 1.0 site will cease to exist.
Hope that clears up any misconception.
If I had been more aware of the migration script and how it was used, I would have done this at the beginning. I don't want to go back now and perform a migration, and then have to re-do all the template modifications again. There were too many.
I just want to bring the articles over all at one time, if possible. If not, then I'll do them one by one.

Good stuff. Then the only things to consider are moving all the images that may be in articles or modules over to directories of the same name and structure on the new site and then double checking urls.
The migration script only messes with the database, so your template files won't be touched by it. The database is where all the actual text for the articles and everything is stored and the structure of the 1.5 database is different than the 1.0 structure.
Some things to keep an eye out for...
If some links don't work on your test or development install, check to see if they are for a full url or partial. It's easy to get consumed with a site overhaul and spend lots of time tracking down a problem that really isn't a problem.
Some layout issues might show, like intros for articles being doubled or blog layout pages like the frontpage. This is almost always just going back into the article or menu item parameters and setting those back to what you need, like "Show" or "Hide" intro text.
Sounds like you've got the tough part already done.
