Updating templates and extensions -- need advice

Hi,
I know that RT occasionally updates certain elements, such as extensions and maybe templates.
For extensions is there a prescribed method of doing these updates so that preferences are maintained or is it a case of starting over from scratch and having to uninstall, install the new version, and then go through the tweaking step by step again?
If templates are updated this would seem a bit more perilous, as many changes have taken place with mine and I wouldn't even want to think about having to replicate those.
Just need some practical advice on how to approach these issues.

As far as extensions go, uninstall and reinstalling is the usual method....
Of course, you may have some tweaking to do if you've customized your settings. - Thanks,
