G2 can be installed in a sub folder and they advise that the actual media directory is outside of your web route.

For clarification, can someone explain the part in red ??

    • To answer my own previous question of having the actual media directory outside of your web route means to place is it anywhere outside of you public html directory for security reasons I am not yet aware of. FYI - I'm working through the multisite setup and it is about 11 steps just for the Gallery2 configuration.

      David,

The reason for this is to prevent people from accessing the image files directly. While this is not an issue with family photo sharing sites, G2 is designed to allow professional photographers to showcase their work with the system and even sell the images directly. Thus the need to "protect" the media directory. ;)

For your family site, don't forget to look at the integration with the various photo printing services. That way if Auntie Em wants a print of little Joey, she can select the image in the gallery and with a couple of clicks, purchase a 10x12 glossy from a photo print service ;D

why don't you try Simple Image Gallery from joomlaworks.gr? you can find it at http://www.joomlaworks.gr/#downloads_section

That is a nice plugin that I may use as a viewer. But, I needed something that I can let Auntie Em upload her own photos to her own folder.

I figured the security precaution was warranted and now I can see why with your example. Thanks for the tip for the linking to photo printing sites. I had not gotten, nor thought, that far ahead yet.

I have G2 setup in a multisite configuration. It was a bit tedious just because it was my first implementation. From what I have seen thus far with the folder and security features, I think I have made the right choice.
