    Help me choose forum software!

Posted 15 years 3 months ago
    • Hi,

I'm planning on re-doing my Joomla site (once again using RT stuff) and I have a number of questions, especially regarding discussion boards and related topics.

Can anyone help me narrow my search and clarify my thinking? I'm semi-literate in this stuff--I'm not a programmer but have learned much here in the forums over the past two years.

I'm looking at (Kunena) Fireboard and phpbb3--and anything else you might suggest.

I don't need any sort of password/username integration with Joomla.

      What I would like is:

      1) A simple to use (for both the user and me), uncluttered-looking forum. Something that looks like Vanilla would be wonderful.
      2) A well-designed discussbot where comments appear at the end of articles and in the forum.
      3) A well-designed "latest topics" module--I haven't liked many of these I've seen in the past. What I have in mind is one that emphasizes the first part of the post and encourages viewers to click and read. Many I've seen however have a full time stamp, category name, etc which tends to obscure what the reader really cares about (the test he wants to respond to...).
      4) Finally, it needs to work with RT's comment icon which I've seen in recent themes--apparently designed for Jcomment.

      Advice?

    • Look at phpBB3 and the RT themes that match your site.
    • Thanks,

    • I just renewed and all I can say is "Wow"--things really have advanced since I last worked on a template from RT. I'm lost! :)

Quick question to avoid me going down a wrong path.

If I use phpbb3 will the little cloud "number of comments" icon still work? Will the latest comment section still look the same as the demo? Does phpbb3 work in conjunction with Jcomment in some way or do I delete Jcomment?

All extreme newbie questions but I'm a newbie again--just when I thought I was getting somewhere :)

Thanks--I did look at that but I'm confused at a fairly basic level.

What I need are comments after each article and also collected together in a forum.

Is the right way to go Jfusion and phpbb or do I use JComments and phpbb--using Rokbridge in some way? Or...?

Just get me started on the right path, please! :)

    • Well, Joomla + pHpBB3 (RokBridge) + JComments should do the job imo.

Have not used JFusion, I am happy with RokBridge so far. But the decision is always yours

    • O.K., I've got Jfusion installed. I've (still) got JComments installed. I hve phpbb3 installed with an RT theme.

I try to turn the JFusion discussbot on--nothing seems to happen.

I try to turn Jcomment content plug-in off and I get a fatal error. RT seems to have a hard-coded reference to it in the Reaction template.

All I want is the comments at the end of an article to appear in the phpbb forum automatically.

Not quite sure what I am doing. Not quite sure the way forward. :)

Help! can someone hold my hand through this--or point me t a thread or documentation that will show me the way?
