Will the current templates work for Joomla 1.6?

  • Will the current templates work for Joomla 1.6?

    • Apologies if this is a topic that has been covered elsewhere, but as the initial release of Joomla 1.6 is only a couple of months away - in theory - I was wondering whether the current templates, especially those with the Gantry framework, would work on 1.6 sites? And if not, are there plans to update certain templates and not others?

My question is partly prompted as I installed the alpha 2 version to have a look at the differences, and found that apart from the home page the basic template was lost when you clicked on any links or menu items.

Some idea of what is ahead would be helpful. Thanks!

    • I also am interested in this but Afterburner is my template of choice.

Any estimates on when Afterburner will be 1.6 ready?

      Thanks!

    • Sort of have to wait for Joomla 1.6 first. Right now it's pretty early in the build process and a lot can change, so it's not worth the development teams time to convert anything just yet.

I don't think any of us will be left high and dry on it so I wouldn't sweat if I were you :cheesy: .

Excellent. I logged in to specifically find an answer to this question. I've spent a considerable amount of time working on my site with my Iridium template and I really like it. I don't want to restart all over when Joomla 1.6 is released. :D

    • $mainframe->isAdmin() is not a function currently in the new Joomla 1.6 alpha 2 release, so pretty much rokcandy and the template manager don't work in it. So I think the answer is "no" currently, but I'm sure once they get past beta into a rc and final 1.6 release RocketTheme would be the first to be up-to-date. Unfortunately, I think it may be a while before we get a stable build of the new Joomla 1.6 CMS :( So much code for them to write with all the new features, and it's so exciting to think about all the ACL and stuff that I wish I could just fast forward 6 months or a year!

Until then... crossing my fingers :)

    • BTW, the new themes with Gantry fall into that category, and although docs.joomla.org/JApplication/isAdmin is there and it looks like that function was not depricated, I think maybe it will pop back up in the beta... but since ACL applies to the administrator interface too, I think that the whole idea of isAdmin() won't be relevant, it'd be more like isAdmin() and hasPermissions('com_templates') or hasPermissions('com_plugins')... get my drift?

    • I'm not really talking about a production level template. (My examples of Afterburner and Versatility may have led folks astray.)

I'd like to see one simple template in 1.6 that can be changed as 1.6 changes so that we have something to work with and learn on.

As soon as it's stable enough for simple sites, we'll probably implement some 1.6 sites -- knowing that we will not want to use some of the new features because they're not ready for prime time.
