I've been a webmaster for about 10 years now and for most of the past 10 years I have used Dreamweaver to build and manage my websites. It was not until just recently that I started using Joomla and I can clearly see the advantages but why oh why do some web developers look down on the use of Joomla as cheating? Perhaps to some extent it is because Joomla really makes it easy to build more sophisticated websites in less time and it also makes it much easier to manage. So, I'm just wondering how many of you use Joomla to build websites for clients and do you let them know that you are using Joomla?

I have used Joomla ever since it split from Mambo. I always tell my clients that I use an open source content management system called Joomla. What they pay me for is my expertise (such as it is!!) in hosting and doing the technical work of setting up and managing the website. I have never had anyone say that they do not want me to use the open source content management system called Joomla. I always use that long-winded description - it means that I don't hide anything. Some of the biggest global organisations now use open source content management systems, and I usually drop a few names - that usually impresses people and helps to allay any reservations.
Its certainly not cheating, its just being sensible. Its the nature of things that the present rests on the foundations of the past, why reinvent the wheel every time you wish to make a car? Use what is already here, its about efficiency and ease of use, not kudos and pride.

Rae, that's true. I first started building website by hard coding using Windows Notepad back in about 1997. Then I saw MSFrontPage and thought that could never do as good a job, but I tried it out.
Ha!! I used FrontPage until 2005,when I discovered Mambo (first thought that it was an Australian surf clothing maker!! - same name, different thing) and then Joomla in 2006. I thought that I would be losing control of the website if I used a CMS, but I tried it out.
Ha!! I found that, even though there are certain compromises, I could concentrate on the content and let the CMS look after the layout. My sanity was saved - well, I think so, anyway!!
So all my sites are now using Joomla, and either I or the client can update the content of the site without very much training for the client and without having to worry about breaking the layout coding. Now I can have a glass or three with dinner without having to worry about late night calls from clients saying that they were just changing one of their pages and it broke!! :cheesy:
Sorry for the long-winded rambling post. If I was still doing hard coding of my sites, I wouldn't have time for long posts like this.
