Ways to increase RT template performance

Anyway to create some templates with a reduced amount of images or use more image sprites? Looking into the loading performance (amount of http requests) of my sites one of the biggest performance issues I keep seeing is the amount of images being loaded.
How about a template or two that is done with almost all CSS (CSS3) effects?
